Atlas Blue Spruce

Hudson, OH

We have a darling (odd shaped) atlas blue spruce. Although we are zone 5 (ohio) the tree has survived 3 years, despite ups & downs it is putting out new growth and appears happy. Now I have read that this will become a very large tree. My questions are how fast will it grow and how large can it become say, in the next 20 years. While the tree is still moveable (about 7 - 8 feet tall), we want to make sure it is in a good spot.

Also, I'd like to know the difference between an atlas blue spruce & atlas blue cedar. The names seem to be used interchangeably.

cbwinters

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Spruces have their needles singly along all of their shoots; cedars have most of their needles in dense clusters, with only a few singly at the tips of the shoots.

Worth adding that, by and large, cedars are not hardy in zone 5. Blue Spruce is hardy to zone 3.

I'm not sure there really is a "blue atlas" spruce, I think it's just plain Blue Spruce. I googled both, and there are plenty of references to Atlas Blue cedar, but except for one person's post on Garden Web that mentions blue atlas spruce, everything else is just blue spruce.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

In answer to your questions, these links will help you decide whether to move it or not:

This last link lists the height in 20 years, but that may be off since they list the mature height as 30 - 45 feet.
