Mexican Petunia
Donna, I really like this plant. I've passed up a chance to buy it a couple of
times now because I don't know if it continues blooming all summer.
Is this the same as Solanum lacianatum (sp) ?
Let us know how long your's blooms please.
Jackie
Mexican petunia is Ruellia, not related to your Solanum.
It blooms all summer, here near St. Louis. Readily self-sows, too.
Thanks Eggs Zachtley. Love the
plants that give us a long bloom season.
Thanks for the id ecrane
patootie, I'll keep you posted for how long it blooms for me.
:) Donna
Thanks Donna.
Such a purrrrrrty flower!
Love both colors. The foliage is nice too.

This is really a beautiful plant but so invasive here in Pakistan, last year I pulled one from wild and after that I can see every where in my garden and now I am pulling out all the babies.

Brical,
I have the white one and will save some seed for ya. It is not as fast growing, doesn't flower as much as the blue and it never makes a thick clump like the blue.
PerennialGirl, I have the pink... if you want to trade in the future LOL!
Well sure, Nath!
;) Donna
Thanks so much Dale, thats great!!!What can I send you in return?

VERY invasive....just yanked up a lot, really wish I had never planted it.
yes, so invasive here in central florida. it is pretty though. i've learned to admire it from afar after pulling up endless plants in the keys. although it blooms almost every day of the year here, the blooms fall off no later than mid-day or as soon as the hot sun hits them.
I have a whole hedge of Mexican Petunias. I like them. I do pull up a few extras every now and then, but not many.
Mine start dropping there blooms around 1-2'oclock, making a carpet of flowers on the ground. By the next morning they are all gone, and they are blooming again. : )

Heh Dale,sent you rain,,,,did you get it.LOL
I stole some of cuttings from my older brother who hates the plant and have them growing in a large bucket I converted into a pot. (It only took putting the plant into it to make it a pot LOL)
I was reading that u can get seeds and I'd like some guidance with this. I've never noticed after the flowers drop off where the seeds could be. Can someone give me some info as to where to look? I just cut the tops to keep them from getting leggy, dip them in root starter and stick them back into the pot but i'd be interested in trying my hand with the seeds. Thanks for any help
p.s. if anyone can share some white seeds or cuttings I'd love to have some :)
it grows everywhere for me but seedlings are easy to remove. One thing that helps me control it is to whack the plant to about 4" from the ground towards to end of our winter.
the seeds explode when they are ripe and shoot a fair distance away, at least the pink ones did. i could hear them. i can't remember what the purple ones did. you can take your trimmings and stick them in water. they will root in about a week.
Dale, whats the pretty little daisy and the grass...nice pic...your garden?
Dale, that is just beautiful...your neighbours must be so pleased to have you as their neighbour...I know I would be!!!more pics of your garden please!!!!
I love yellow!! What is that plant? Im sure its out of my zone.
Oriole - it is Cassia alata and yes it is a tropical plant. Zone 8>south.
see it here> http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/371/
Dale, you home reminds me of the home I grew up in......and my grandmother's.....and my great-grandmother's. The screen door is the best part of a home.....notice I didn't say house. The facsa of my home of over 40 years doesn't work for a screen door....sssooooo.....I put one on the interior on my sewing/studio/junk/craft room. Is quite enticing....with a piece of lace pulled to one side.....gives a lot more room without a hard door to go against a wall.....and the squeak when it opens is the music of angels. I go on and on and onandonandonandon Wish you lived in Texas, would love to be your neighbor.

I am so glad I saw this thread. I just bought one of these at Regans. I was going to put it in my garden in the back. I now will plant it in a combo pot in my courtyard where it can't spread all over. I sure do not need to make more work for myself.
THANKS.
I just went out and took pictures of mine. I don't have much trouble with them spreading.
Occasionally 2 or 3 here and there, but they are very easy to pull up.
The 1st picture shows one side, and the next picture the other side.
You will see a couple that I have let grow so that I can give them to someone else. I have had the hedge about 4 years now. : )

They make a lovely hedge Lucy...looks good!
Definitely a beautiful hedge!
:) Donna
Thank you. : )

I just saw this thread...And I recently received one of these from a DGer in SC...I'll be interested to see if it spreads like it does for you here in our zone. I have the short purple ruellia. The clumps do get larger, but it has never self seeded. Is that one any better behaved in your area?
Bev
I have the mounding Ruellia - Katie's Ruellia. It spreads too (I never planted it; it just showed up and now I have bunches) but I don't think it is nearly as invasive as the taller Ruellia. I had that at my prior home, and was constanlty pulling it up everywhere. I will put up with pulling the Katie's when it strays, but I don't have the patience (or the back) for weeding out the taller Ruellia. Just my 2 cents worth....
