Black Swallowtail

CAtbird8, Thanking God for a successful operation!
I have four cystalis that haven't emerged. I had five cats formed cystalis on June 27th & 28th. One emerged after 6 days but didn't uncurl correctly. I'm patiently awaiting the other four. It's been 14 days. How long does it take? The one that emerged early must have been very premature.

Loonie, I got some Castles from Monarchlive also. I'm so glad I did!

I'm very grateful for all your advice. I'm glad that we're learning together! Thanks for all the info. I give praise for your good news, Catbird8, and will pray for continued good health for you.

Cordeledog,

You didn't say what butterfly for the chrysalises but the 6 day turn-around was way too early. Premie. Monarchs generally take 10 to 12 days. As you will learn, ST's seem to have their own clocks. Spring and Summer they are fairly consistent here in Houston at around 12 days after developing the chrysalis shell. A few have gone 13 - 14 days. Late fall however is a whole 'nuther story. The can hibernate. So,
you never know when they plan to do that or when they plan to emerge.
Good luck. Catbird8 appreciated all the prayers from close family and friends and very much appreciates the feed-back for the Dave's Garden bunch. Thanks to all, as we were really sweating that one out.

Rod, they were ( 4 still are cyrstalis) East Black Swallowtails. It was even sprinkling rain when the first one emerged after only 6 days. He really brought tears to my eyes when he never uncurled correctly.

Adrienne,
Please forgive me for taking so long to get back to you, my son is visiting and we've been out with his insect/spider book identifying everyone we can :) Yesterday we saw a Carolina mantid and Patrick (my son) caught one our resident yellow rat snakes, he was so proud :)

Mailing address is Anthony (GPS and MAPQUEST and YAHOO MAPS use mailing addresses). My physical address is Sparr, the little town next to Anthony. Our delivery men have finally gotten used to small towns such as ours, was rough in the beginning.
I currently have 4 Pipevine Swallowtails in chrysalis state in a tank, will take pics as they emerge and upload them here. I've never raised Pipevines in a tank before. Their cats sure are fat little buggers.
Gingers are blooming well right now and butterflies, especially Zebra Swallowtails, black Swallowtails, etc.. flying all over the place. If you stop by, bring your camera you should get some nice shots. Had hummers fighting over flowers this afternoon, it was hilarious.

Here is a picture of a Giant Swallowtail on celery...I swear, so I had to take a picture, this is something I've never had happen before.
