Hi Kevin - The soft spine-like protuberances are postulated to assist the plant when climbing in it's native habitats...similar to the protuberances on
Ipomoea turbinata

I've noticed that these protuberances also tend to develop into roots when rooting cuttings >so they may help pieces of the stem that break off to gain a foothold on the ground and assist subsequent rooting...
