Found this bug out in the yard and have no idea what it is, Hoping someone here might know. It is 2 1/2 to 3 inches long from head to wing tip and over 1/2 inch wide in the mid section.

I believe it to be a Cicada...Looks like what I saw in Japan. Did it make any buzzzing noise?

It is a Cicada, possibly the Dog-day Cicada (Tibicen canicularis): http://bugguide.net/node/view/7150/bgimage

Thanks shannon and Kennedyh!!

I'd be interested in finding out if these are native to South Carolina...
Although many find them ugly looking, I love them.

There's nothing like being in Japan in the sweltering heat during the day then at night as it starts to cool off a bit these creatures come out and do their dance which includes a buzzing beyond comparison.

Let me know if you find any others and also if you find out if they are native or new to your neck of the woods.

cicadas make the beautiful early evening sounds!

deltaqueen, We can hear sounds in the evening coming from the woods in back of a home thats down the street from us, This insect must be whats making the sound.

Sometimes around here the cicadas buzz so much that it is deafening. Have to go inside to escape the noise. Thank goodness, they're not that bad every year. I've heard people call them locusts but they aren't locusts. The cicada sheds its shell and when I was a kid, I would go around collecting the empty crunchy shells. You can hang them on your clothes and be a scary looking kid. Bwaaa Ha Ha. Sheverne

Good grief, *shaking head* just tonight DH was walking around with his "pet bug" hanging on his shorts.

I don't mind the sound of the cicadas but it can be quite loud.
