Finally!

Lawrenceville, GA

Don't be so hard on her, Terry.... she's having a hard enough time paitently waiting for hummingbirds.

O'm ordering right now but lookie what else I found-

My cousin in NJ sent me a beautiful fancy feeder - blue glass with the red blossoms - and my hummers wouldn't go near it. Makes a pretty doo-dad, though. I'm kind of glad, because it would be a nightmare to clean.

I got my wrought iron hook at Walmart - it's not as fancy, but I'm not a fancy girl. :-)

I didn't buy those green or blue glass hummingbird feeders because I figured they wouldn't go near them but they were cute.

Here's the plant bracket I bought-
http://www.antiquehardware.com/product/02016713/
I'm going to hang one of those HummZingers off of that as soon as I find them.

I also bought a concrete St Francis. I needed that but the shipping is 2-4 weeks on it. The shipping and handling at this site that terryr found is really affordable. I'm impressed.

And ladies... I spotted an unidentified flying object by the hummingbird feeder out back when I was by the sink and that was no moth! It zinged in, scoped out the area, and zinged back out again. I am feeling as if I am going to have hummingbirds this year after all. I'm very happy!

Bummer, just got my e-mail confirmation and it says-
"Drop shipped from the manufacturer - please allow 3 - 5 weeks for delivery" on the concrete St Francis Bird feeder.

Did you order this for me as a thank you??
http://www.antiquehardware.com/product/70012453/

heyitsmejudy, lol, somebodies gotta be hard on her!

No dear, I missed you so much in the threads I ordered two of those copper birdbaths for you. One to flank each side of your front door. Just kidding.

heyitsmejudy- what's the female equivalent of a male brut?

Hey kaperc, how did you like the plant bracket I did order? It's less ornate. I like things simpler too.

editing to add that I just realized somebody liked my tabletop hummingbird feeder! Thank you kaperc. I was starting to feel sort of silly for liking it.

Ooops, sorry, I forgot to answer in writing - didn't you hear me thinking? Yes, I liked that hook very much. :-)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I have to stay out of that site. Otherwise I will buy things I have no room for. lol. As it is I have 4 LA irises to place and 16 TB irises on order to figure out where to place. lol. I need more land. lol.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Yay EQ!

I bought a Hummzinger a few weeks ago and nary a hummer will come near it, I'm so depressed about it. I don't know why....it has a great deep moat that keeps the ants out, so it's ant free.
Don't order the Hummzinger dome thingy....it's huge, that would surely scare off hummers, I sent it back.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Kidding? Why I never! hmph.

You're probably right, that bracket wouldn't look good on your plain and simple house but it would look mahvelous on mine. So there!

Ummm???? I ordered two of those copper birdbaths for you. One to flank each side of your front door. Just kidding??? I said just kidding to having ordered two. Look and read terryr, look and read...lol.....

Yes kaperc, it was that mental telepathy thing between two people. I put my index fingers on my temples and heard you thinking how nice my tabletop feeder was but sort of felt a little iffie and just wanted to verify that we were on the same wavelength and all. When I stuck my index fingers back on my temples again, I definitely heard you thinking how you liked that bracket ;)

Yes pepper, stay OUT of that site. Not a good idea to be messing around in there or you might end up at one of those pay day advance places they advertise on tv. I left that site with the DTs. 20 little iris? No sweat, I'll be rooting for you. You'll find a place to stick them in the ground.

You know fly_girl, I don't think either of the HummZingers I bought had a dome on them. I thought they looked like flying saucers or something. Can you take the dome off of your HummZinger? For what it's worth, if your hummers won't come near your HummZinger... Menards has several styles of glass hummingbird feeders on sale right now. Lowes has some pretty fancy ones by National Wildlife as well as several other moderate styles, and Home Depot had those table top watering can feeders and a few other styles. Most stores are carrying a few different styles of feeders.

Now where does it say you were only kidding about ordering two?? But that you did indeed order one?? Look and read Ms Equil, look and read.......

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Did you find out what kind of hummer is visiting you, Equil? Buff-Bellied Hummingbird is a new one on me.

terryr you are a sassy lil thing ;) Sometimes it's not what one says so much as what one doesn't say.

I have no idea which hummingbird came to visit me the first time and I have no idea which hummer came to visit me yesterday. I went online to look up photos and came up with the Buff-Bellied Hummer. Then I looked in several bird books and "confirmed" my identification. The problem is that it couldn't be that bird. I'm well over a thousand miles out of its breeding range. Basically, I'm about 3 or 4 states north for that bird.

You know, everyone keeps talking about a drastic decline in hummers this year. I've begun to notice fewer butterflies and definitely fewer moths. Has anyone else read this thread started by ceejaytown-

Somebodies got to keep you on your toes my dear Equil! The only hummingbird I thought we had around here...and I mean IL (and it's the only one in AR where we go and it's the only one down in TN where we lived), is the Ruby-throated hummingbird. Can you get close enough with your magnifying glass to get a better ID? ;)

Try these links:
http://www.hummingbirds.net/migration.html
http://www.hummingbirds.net/species.html

We get about four species here and I can rarely tell what I'm looking at - except for the male Costa's, which has these feathers that flare back from its head. They move so fast and the colors change when they turn in the sun, sometimes looking red, then purple, then in the shade there is no color! And let's see, which one has the white tips on the outside tail feathers, not the inside? And then there's the female that's bigger than the male. Eeeek! I need enlarged photos at all the windows. :-)

I looked at all your photos and I know it's not possible but it looked like one of those Buff-Bellied Hummers to me. For Illinois it says I've probably got Ruby-throated, Rufous, and Broad-billed. I am so far north in Illinois that I am about one mile from the WI border and the site says that state has Ruby-throated, Rufous, Anna's, and Green Violet-ear. In Michigan we get a lot of Hummers and from their list (Ruby-throated, Rufous, Broad-billed, Green Violet-ear, White-eared) I've definitely been able to spot Ruby-throated and Broad-billed. Those two I know because they buzz around my kitchen window up north like little B52 bombers.

I went to the What Bird site and still came up with believing I saw a Buff-Bellied Hummer which we know can't be possible.
Here's their entry for their Green Violet-ear Hummer and I definitely don't have that Hummer-
http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/862/overview/Green_Violet-ear.aspx

Early this morning I thought I saw a flash of yellow over by the feeder out my kitchen window. That thing definitely wasn't moving like a Goldfinch so that could have maybe been some sort of a moth because I can't think of any hummingbird that is yellow.

I've got an idea, you all come and pile in my house and sit in front of the kitchen window and tell me what I've got... I just cleaned it with Windex on both sides so you can now get a pretty good look-see. I'll pass around some popcorn!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Plain with a tiny bit of salt?

Yellow? I've seen my goldfinches drink from the moat. Could you have an oriole visiting? They come to feeders, too - the ones we get are twitchy as heck and very, very fast and loud.

I'd love to see a broad-billed hummer. Have you been able to find both male/female pictures of each possible type? I know some of the females are hard to tell apart. Before you go out of your mind, though, call a local bird watching society and ask them if anyone else has seen the BB.

What Bird is fun. Cracks me up though when you start listening to the calls of hummers. I know there is a difference when I hear them, but basically they are all "tsk tsk." LOL

We can have a few bowls, I like popcorn with my butter ;)

Too big for an Oriole. I haven't a clue what my mind saw out there but we do have goldfinces all over the place because of that thistle feeder which I really should take down. I'm beginning to think I'm seeing some sort of a hummingbird mirage out there but then my one kid today came running in the house telling me he saw a hummingbird today so maybe not.

Haven't been able to find female photos of all the species. I'll have to sit around and wait and get another peek and then do another search. I have the camera there behind the sink on the edge of a Streptocarpus so I'm ready!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Armed and dangerous!

Edited to add: Now you've made me hungry for popcorn!

I think not positive that I just figured out what was the very first visitor to the hummingbird feeder out back- a juvenile female Roufus Hummingbird. Look at this photograph of a juvenile female-

Here are some more photos-

Girl Scout Thin Mints... just had to toss those into this thread (evil snicker)

Oh ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a pair of Broad-Billed at my feeder today! I was getting worried there for a bit with no activity and then while I was outside walking to and fro out back trying to figure out what to stick in the ground where... they zoomed past me and over to the feeder out back. I couldn't be happier.

The feeder out front was totally drained. I think I have to check for a leak on that because no one here has noticed any hummers out front.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Cool!!

Yup, happy dance time for me!

Townsend, MA

The upside-down feeders always seem to leak, as it gets warmer the liquid expands and is pushed out. The humzinger style seems to work best for me.

Equil, don't count out the possibilty of a stray, only ruby throats breed in our area, but we've had unidentified hummers here.

By the way, it took three years for us to see much activity at the feeders , so I know your in for a treat !!!

I have HummZingers. I haven't a clue where they are but I have them. When I locate the box, I'll replace the feeder out front that keeps draining. I filled it up again today and it was drained by dinner time.

This is my third year. I religiously put out hummingbird feeders for the past two years and got zip nadda nothing yet in fall I could see their tiny little nests everywhere. I think I just found out why I might be getting hummers for the first time. There was a family down the street a ways and the lady of the house was an avid birder. She must have had 100+ (no exaggeration) bird feeders and birdhouses in her yard with a running waterfall for her birds as well as all sorts of water thingies that I've not seen before. I know she had quite a few humming bird feeders and jelly feeders for the orioles. I heard the couple divorced after a 30 some odd year marriage last winter and she no longer lives in this house. She took all of her bird accessories with her. I wonder if I am getting all of her hummers?

Hmmm, maybe I should put out some jelly feeders for her orioles.

As far as stray hummers, I'll take anything that comes. My husband is really excited too.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Since the ants are being a pain in the rear, I need to locate my mister and get it set up on one of my birdbaths. Hmm....I bet it would look great on my new copper one that arrived on my doorstep today..... ;-)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

got a new kitty today. will tell story tomorrow. I am dead on my rear tonight so I gotta get off here in a min.

Oh goodie! A new copper birdbath and a new kitty. I don't know which is nicer!

Oh ladies, my Broad-Billed hummers have been back to visit me again!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Aren't you the one. Regular hummer mommy now, huh? :-)

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Equil, so glad you've got them coming regularly. You've probably got a nest nearby. Got any pictures? Don't think I've ever seen a Broad-Billed Hummer.

Ahhhhhhhh, I'm a hummer mommy!

They're not exactly coming regularly though. I'm only catching them visiting about once a day and they don't seem to have a set schedule with their visits occurring all over the board time wise.

No, no photos. Wish I had photos. I have the camera in plants right behind the kitchen sink waiting for a Kodak moment but so far I've not been quick enough to get my hands out of dish water and dried to grab the camera. Seems as if when I see them going to the feeder, I am usually in the upper driveway about 50' away or so potting up something or other and they are so far away they look like little specs in the distance but I know what they are by the way they fly.

That hummingbird feeder out front is being drained by hummingbirds and isn't leaking. I was out there adding water to the little pond and as I was crouched down I heard that telltale humming sound. Sure enough, one lone hummer of some sort that zipped off and then a few minutes later, two hummingbirds that are differently colored than the two hummingbirds out back appeared then zipped off. I went in the house and peeked through the front windows and they came back. My feeders have been found but the hummers evidently don't like me in the area of their feeders.

I think I am getting my x-neighbors hummers. Now I am sort of greedy and want to try to rope in her orioles. Does anyone have jelly feeders? If so, what style.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

This is similar to what I have and the price is good. http://www.wildbirddepot.com/store-products-na01-Woodlink-Oriole-Feeder_23994392.html

Mine has little dimples between the feeder holes for the jelly - these deep pockets might work better. The hummers seem to prefer this feeder when the orioles aren't around, too.

That's a combo feeder. That's really nice.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

you can buy a spiky thing that can hold orange halves. A friend of mine spreads grape jelly onto the oranges. Orioles also like hummingbird food....
