Giant Crinum (Spider) Lily

Titusville, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a giant crinum w/white flowers. It is sending up flower stalk after flower stalk. I've noticed that seed pods are forming after the flowers fade. Does anyone know how to germinate these? When are they "mature" (i.e., when do I take them off the plant?... when green?... brown?). I'm attaching a couple of pics... these are not of my plant, but my plant and seed pods look just like the pics.

Here's a pic of the pods

You may want to chat with user - tggfisk. She and I traded recently. I got one of her Ellen Bosanquet crinum. She may be able to give you further tips. :)

You could also post this on the bulb forum. Lotz of Crinum lovers over there.

Good idea, Beaker! :-) Thanks!

Thanks for nod, Rebecca...I usually propagate my crinum by division. It seems a bit easier, or at least faster, way to do it. Unless, that is, you'd like to hybridize.
'Course DH almost bent his shovel on the ones like I sent to FV:)
With any seeds, I'd wait until they mature and brown. Anyone else??

BTW, I was born in Titusville...Small world, huh?

Very impressive clump of crinums. I think it was crinum seeds that I bought off ebay. I'll have to go check the name of them. I'll take a picture of one starting to sprout and post it.

i started this one from a seedpod five years ago. this is the second year it has bloomed. it was a green pod still hanging on the mother plant and i just stuck it in a pot. dumb luck, probably. lol

It's a beauty!!

Hey Bev - Yup, small world!!!! :-)

Trackinsand - Good info... thanks! I've found if I leave those green pods on too long, they just start to rot. I'll try just sticking them in dirt.

Division is probably much faster, etc.,,,, I'm only trying to grow from seed for the fun of it! To me, it's an accomplishment if it works!!!!!

thanks! it was a challenge for me just to see if i could do it. i don't remember anymore how deep i planted it, not too deep i don't think.

I'm thinking I'm going to plant it with a little bit of the seed pod sticking out of the dirt. :-) Yup, it's the challenge that I want too!

i think that's how i did it. i'm trying to remember....not having much luck. the seedpod was on an old crinum in a keys nursery. not one for sale. i just broke it off and stuck it in my pocket (at the urging of a bad friend, lol) i had it in a small pot and after it started growing, i just kept stepping up the pot size. then we moved to central florida and i brought it along with me. it's in a giant pot now, to hide some ugly ac stuff on the side of the house. they say that no one ever killed a crinum. they are tough plants.

trackinsand - LOL... snatched that pod, huh?! My husband is always groaning when I head toward plants that don't belong to me... hehehehehe. I'm really cautious though... I can just imagine the restaurant owner running out and making me give the seeds back LOL!

you know the old saying in florida, don't you? never ask outright for a cutting or a seed and never say thank you; it's bad luck. that's a hard one for me to follow though. usually i'm drooling all over the kind person who bestows a plant product on me!

The drool MUST be the reason for the Florida saying.... don't ask, no thank you, no drool! !

You can plant the seeds as soon as they fall from the pod. Many times they have already germinated inside the "skin" and can be placed half-buried in the soil. The time to actual germination varies from cultivar to cultivar, but just keep them slightly moist in part sun-shade in the warmth, and they will soon be on their way.

It's good if you can keep them green and growing year-round for a year or two.

BTW~

Although they are called "Cinum Lilies" or "Milk and Wine Lilies", Crinums are Amaryllids which means that the ovary is below the corona of tepals, and in true lilies it is above them.

Cool! Thanks, raydio! I'll be sure to post if I am successful getting any to germinate.

i'll be watching to see if mine make pods this year.

Does anybody know where you might buy this giant lily? I've been searching the internet to no avail.

if you do a search for crinum in plantfiles, you can look over the kind you want and there will be vendors at the top of each page. i've gotten nice ones from plantdelights.

They will be open this weekend and next weekend if you feel like a road trip. Always worth it just to see the Botanical Gardens alone!

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!! I haven't had a lot of time to baby these things, but I've had LOTS of seed pods, so I popped a few in some soil and I FINALLY have a plant! It's SO cute! . Wow! I'm so excited!
