Thinking of getting Jm emerald lace

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi I have a guy that wants to sell me what he says is an emerald lace I don't know any thing about them but I'v wanted one for a long time he says the trunk is about 6 or 7 inch diamitor and he wants 25- 30 $ for it is that a good price for one ? I think he said it is about 5 ft. tall understand I don't think hes as smart as he thinks he is so I,m a little sceptical I told him I want to see it first.

I would definitely want to see it first, but if it's really that large then $25-30 is a steal, JM's are expensive and you'll often pay way more than that for a much smaller tree.

7" diameter is huge for here. I know of one close to 10 years old that is 5-6".

I saw a JM Trompenburg at Petittis' in Cleveland that was $495.00 for 1-1/4" caliper 4' tall. It was stunning. Get the idea?

Where did it come from would be one question. If its truly a JM Emerald Lace and if it is healthy and not stolen well, I'd go for it. Make sure you water it religiously and regularly this first season.

In that case, if it has a large enough root ball to allow it to survive transplanting then consider your self lucky. A mature JM that size is just outstanding.

Transplanting any tree when fully leafed out requires special and careful handling. Number one - a root ball large enough to support the canopy. Proper site preparation, planting at the right depth, watering in at planting, regular watering, all that good stuff will be important to insure it's survival. You might consider shading it for a while. I would ask him to mark the north side of the trunk so that you can orient it the same way. It helps. JM's can be tricky. Pull out all the stops in getting it in the ground the right way and baby it this whole year. Don't fertilize. If you absolutely think you want to give it a feeding then Schultz root starter is the only stuff that I trust. Even then I would use it half strength.

But Wow, what you are gonna have when it is all done and in! Go for it!
Most posters here would love to see a picture of it. Please post one if you can when you get it planted.
