Messed up smoke tree

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

My smoke tree seemingly died but two pieces of it grew and now I don't know what to do with it. It's a stick with two little offsprings on either side.

And, they never seem to grow. They just stay the same size! It's been two years or more.

The dark purple-green leaves are regrowth of the smoke tree. The green leaves over at the left are a hickory seedling, presumably planted by a squirrel.

I, too have a struggling Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple', although it isn't as severe as yours. The new growth I have is sparse and limited to 2 inches. As they like soil conditions to be on the lean and dry side I have surmised mine is unhappy for those reasons. They are also very susceptible to verticillium wilt. That could be the case with yours. Mine might meet with the spade this fall. There are other shrubs/trees better suited for rich moist soil, but gosh a well grown Smoke Tree is nice to look at.

Definable. I'm trying to think of another place it might do better in. I tried full sun in a dry are but it burned. Not a pun.

I had my purple one die back to the ground one year, but it really shot up that year.
