Please help.. what could these be? They can be picked off the plant, don't seem to be alive and are very tiny. I just discovered them (and your website that I'm overwhelmed with!).. is this some kind of bug or a fungus or? Didn't know for sure where to even ask.
CLOSED: What's growing on passion vine, looks like turtle shells
they look similar to these little space ships

Well found Boots, I think you are very close, but following your lead, I located the Barnacle Scale(Ceroplastes cirripediformis): http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IN649 about 1/3 down the page
http://bugguide.net/node/view/5942/bgimage
which is I think even closer to Laryl's image and is found in Arizona
I have created an entry in BugFiles for the Barnacle Scale here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4697/
Laryl,
would you please add your image of the scales to our BugFiles page,
Kennedy
This was my first post here.. I added the photo to the bug files, hope I did it right. Now, my passion vine doesn't look healthy at all.. could these be a reason? What do I do now that I know what it is? You are great! Thank you!
that looks right. good one ken.
the scale looks amazing, but they are horrid little brutes .

I have been trying to rid a lemon tree of scale by using copper and conquer oil, they still seem to be persisting.
I loath to use any of the heavy dutie sprays on fruit, so may have to spray more often
I don't think they do a plant any good.
do you try to remove them yourself too? just to get them out of the yard?
I'm totally new to gardening.. lucky me to have something this nasty in my first year :(
I'll watch for replies, any tips and help appreciated!
Laryl
thanks for adding your image, I have promoted it to represent its family in the BugFiles index here as it is the best scale image we have so far; http://davesgarden.com/bf/browse/order.php?bid=108

wow thank you! I can mark this thread solved, because we know what the monsters are now.. but will I get some advice on what to do? I did read the info with the links given previously. I just want these things to be history. Worried they will spread to my other plants.. that I have precious few of so far!

Don't know if the above is available, for purchase, where you are. Another product that many Americans like is Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide....I'm pretty sure PanamonCreel has said it works on scale (check the label). I'm pretty sure the fruit wouldn't be safe for eating after using the Bayer product though.
