Gardening at work

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Our work site just started its community garden this year. Anyone who wants a garden plot gets assigned one (the response has not been overwhelming so far). Guess what I have planted in mine? LOL. It is very relaxing to take a break and go water your garden, and check out what other people are growing. We are planning to put in a sitting area with a fountain later. This is the view from the 3rd floor where my desk is.

It may be hard to see, but there are hoses with water "T"s on every plot.

Interesting perk--a garden at work. What sort of industry do you work in?

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Hewlett-Packard....I'm a chemist.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Beth - which plot is yours? You'll have to keep us updated on the progress of the garden.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Mine's really hard to see from this shot. There is a small grey shed all the way across the garden. Mine is slightly to the left. You can see two tiny white signs behind my plot. The plot behind mine is where someone planted zuchinni or pumpkins, or something in hills. Someone came along and put two white signs on the hills that say R.I.P.
It doesn look like something is buried there!

grow some greens easy to grow

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

They started this too late in the year for greens. They will just bolt and make seeds because we are getting close to our hot season. I did put down mostly habaneros, carrots, and morning glories (of course!)

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Very Kewl...(!)...Everybodies workplace should have a gardening environment like that(!)...

how about a small pond

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I'd enjoy going to work more, if I could spend a few minutes during the day playing in the dirt!

Wow - cool Beth. Ummm, does HP need any petroleum engineers? I'm on my way. LOL.

Paul, we actually have more than a small pond! We have a LAKE on the other side of the site. The site is 100 acres and it is an old thoroghbred farm originally.

any fish in it ? LOL Paul

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Bass and bluegill. They raffle off fishing when the fish population allows. I won one year but didn't realize I needed a state fishing license TOO, so I didn't get to fish.

We also have sand volley ball courts, a baseball diamond, a soccer field, a cricket field, hiking trails, a movie theater, and a gym with all the latest equipment. As the saying goes' "So much to do, and so little time left for work!"

That looks like fun and opportunity for you Beth. :)

Here is my little garden by the lake and our mini horse who is a thoroughbred at heart. He`s a little horse but he is a spunky fun little dude for sure.

Beth, great way to recharge your cranial cells - very nice.

ditto, all, about work places providing some dirt, sun and water to serfs - er, employees

Karen, your mini-horse looks so peaceful - reminds me of a neighbor's German shepherd many years ago with a placid disposition. Shirley, our gray tabby, always had to ruffle things up - she used to ride that poor pooch bareback around and around the garage. Eventually it got old for the dog and he stopped visiting.

gardener2005, are those shots of your property right now? LOL. That's how summer looks here around mid-August! Love those sunflowers. ;)

Yes, the pictures were taken this past week. People are stopping to look at the Hyuge sunflowers too. :)

We rent a small house by a lake. It is a nice big yard to garden and has a out in the country feel (everybody knows everybody) and yet we are 5 minutes from Wal Mart. That`s the life. :)

Anyways,I thought Beth would like the pictures and think it was cool we had something in common although on different scales here...her work garden is a big idea and my garden is a little but cute idea. :)

Sure! Here is my personal plot. The white signs and beyond are someone else's. I have moss rose and lobelia (with one tomato on the left) in the front row. The next two rows are habaneros. The last row is mini-mums and three MG plants: Sunrise Serenade on the left, Sunsmile Blue in the middle, and Blue Star on the right.

All this dirt was trucked in because the existing dirt wasn't that great. It was a big job that had to wait until it was dry enough to haul and till. For the reason, the garden got started late this year. Next year won't be a problem.

This is for comparison to the first photo. Everyone has a nice garden going. We planted cover crops in the plots that weren't taken. Everything must be organic and no chemical pesticides or fertilizers may be used.

Wow, Beth! That looks great!
