Aloha to all

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Just got back from the mainland and found our new forum! Thank you Dave for listening! Thank you to all who campaigned especially Shari!
I am still reading the back posts, but just wanted to let you all know how much I am enjoying them. The underwater photos are first class (wish I had that skill with a camera - even on terra firma)
I am thrilled to see that we have some mainlanders on the forum, I believe this is going to be a place for anyone who is "tropical" at heart! We love to share our unique areas with others, and are very interested to see how they manage to grow plants we just take for granted...
To introduce myself....We live on the island of Maui. We had visited Maui 12 years ago for our 25th aniversary and as the plane took off to go back home we both said that this was the place we wanted to retire to. We finally moved here 4 years ago and have a half acre of land in Kihei, which is the dry side of the island. I would have prefered to live on the windward side but my husband is half fish, so it was the beach side for us.I have spent the last 4 years trying to hack down the over grown garden and trying to learn all about the plants here. I swear you can hear the weeds growing! The folks who lived here before us were only interested in fruit trees so we have a nice selection, but had to wade through waist high weeds and scrub to even find them! The house was let go to wrack and ruin ( I think the termites were all that was holding it up) so we have also been busy trying to remodel bit by bit as finances allow.
I am SO pleased to meet you all, and hearing about other places - I see some traveling in our future!
A Hui Hou, or a new word I learnt from Shai - Yokwe,

Jenny!!! What a nice post! But I think you should also post here about your name....I think that's cute. I don't envy you the work on the house - not quite the picture of "retiring to Hawaii", that everyone thinks about is it? I'm so glad you are back....John is MIA for a while, and our friend Kell in Oz got a computer virus (playing in the wrong place...tsktsktsk), so he is sporadic at best and we miss him. But everyone here is the best....we have a lot of fun, share a lot of info, and constantly veer off topic! You will fit in beautifully and welcome, welcome, welcome!!!
After all - you helped us get this fun forum!

Everyone - meet (if you don't already know her) - Jenny !

Looking forward to meeting him with great anticipation!

Thank you all for the warm welcome, I am looking forward to meeting you each and everyone of you.

My name - I have two rather elderly greatdanes. One is named Candy, she was my grandkid's dog and my dog (the white one) name is Braveheart, although he is a little misnamed - should really be Chicken ****. He really is a gentle soul and my constant companion. We brought Candy to live with us when we moved because she was fretting without Braveheart when the kids moved out.

Since coming to the island we have inherited six feral cats. A momma cat had kittens under our ohana and of course we had to keep them. We had quite a job catching them to take them to the vet to be spayed and neutered, but now they are becoming quite tame and will occasionally let you pet them. We live in a constant state of armed truce between the dogs and the cats, but truth be told, the dogs really have no heart in the chase and they know perfectly well they can't catch them - the cats know it too, and sashay around just out of reach.

Our next door neighbor has a blue macaw named Nitro. It lives in their tree completely unrestrained and without his wings clipped. Free to come and go at will. Unfortunately he has taken to calling Braveheart's name whenever he sees him, and the poor dog rushes outside to see who is calling him. He hasn't caught on yet!

LOL. That's funny about the Macaw.

Heard from Kell that he is doing a picture tour for a magazine....has limited time till job done - but he's taking cool pics along the way so maybe he will post some. He has posted some cute mailboxes he has found, hopefully more soon.

Love the story of Nitro! We have two cats that we got in Saudi Arabia that were feral when my daughter brought them home. They have been with us everywhere, and bonded so tightly to us that other people call them "devil cats" because they are NOT friendly to anyone else. But to us they are our cuddly little fuzz-butts.
