CLOSED: I thought they were eggs, but I just noticed LEGS!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi again,

I just posted this photo in the butterfly forum, and when I went to re-read my post and congratulate myself on such a clear picture, I noticed some legs or teeth or antennaes or something that I didn't see when I was taking the picture. You'll need to click on the thumbnail to see them.

I'm afraid ask, but what are these? They were on annual poppies and the plant is sort of infested with them. I was thinking they were butterfly eggs, but now I'm thinking they aren't.

They're Aphids! Don't know what kind, though. I'll look around, or maybe someone will know.

.........and aphids are always bad, right? I don't care what kind they are, just whether I should keep them or get rid of them. I have been trying to be green and smash things by hand instead of insecticide, but it's hard when you get over 40 and can't SEE! :)).

Thanks again,
Suzy

The plantfiles entry for P. somniferum has a comment about black aphids. They're probably Aphis fabae, Black Bean Aphids. They are known to eat poppies.

I cross-posted... I've had good luck smushing Aphids with my fingers so far. Their location on the plant is usually predictable once you find them.
