Your spectacular bug, looks like a Giant Mesquite Bug in its last juvenile stage before becoming an adult.
It is in the genus Thasus, but I cannot get an exact match to a species. It is very close to Thasus acutangulus; http://bugguide.net/node/view/63193/bgpage
and might possibly be that species,
