I've Got Hoyas From Seed!

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

since you have so many seedlings, maybe you should split them into a few groups and do some testing? figure out which revival method works best.

Well the Hoya australis seedlings have totally recovered from their yellowing leaf condition. I think what did it was to move them from their florescent light home out into the sunshine and fresh air of the great outdoors. This is a picture of 40 of them. I have another six that are 50% bigger at home in the greenhouse.

Would you just look at those! HOW WONDERFUL! You have done such a great job raising those babies and they all look SO healthy and happy :) What an accomplishment :) *BIG pat on the back, friend* :) Thank you for sharing updated photos, I've been wondering how they were doing :)

Thank you everyone for the good thoughts on these seedlings. It must have helped turn them around. Every year I start, usually from cuttings, 75-100 tropicals to give away to the volunteers who donate hundreds of hours of service to the library in which I work. The plants that I grow have sort of become a tradition. This special volunteer day is always at the end of April, and I guess most of these Hoyas will likely find their way into the hands of these volunteers. I originally was going to give them away for postage on this forum, but with the cost of postage and finding all those boxes, it doesn't seem all that practical. Also, with this Hoya being so common; it is probably not worth the postage for most of you. If however, anyone really wants one of these seedlings, dmail me, and I will do my best to accommodate your request.

Wow...good for you to reciprocate your volunteers with plants grown especially for them!
I own a lot of hoyas, but Australis isn't one of them! It's not commonly sold around here, anyway.

I'm not hinting that I want one, either, LOL!!! (I've simply got to stop collecting plants for awhile, I'm seriously running out of room!)
I really like the idea that you're giving them to those volunteers!

You've done really well with those....I'm impressed!!

I was thinking the same thing Nan, I don't think I have Austalis either but then my very next thought (like yours) was...where would I put it?

I love the fact that they are going to volunteers also .... wonderful gesture!!

Makes this gramma feel good, too!!!

Carol, I never thought of that. You are truly the Grandmother of these plants! I will have to name a couple of them after you.

What Lovely Babies you've got there! Congratulations to Papa Doug and to Gramma Carol.

I have a few just generic Hoya's and I just love them! The Lacunosa has become my very favorite because of the wonderful fragrance! I will have to look up the Australis and see what that one looks like.

Wonderful gesture to give back to those Volunteers Doug! I know they must really be appreciative of your kindness, most folks volunteer their time and efforts not expecting anything in return. It is so nice of you to reward their efforts!

Great Growin!

p.s. That Huge Chirita 'Aiko' that you sent me is doing great! I've really gotten to like the Chirita's!
..... I so agree with Nan, I would love more space for growing plants?! I sure miss having a greenhouse!

Lin, I'm so happy that the Chirita is doing great. I'm always afraid to ask for fear that a plant that I've given away has bit the dust. Has it bloomed for you? I still have another 'Aiko" that is almost as big as the one that I sent off to you. I keep saying that I'm going to get rid of all my plants except for Hoyas, but I can't quite make myself do it.

Yes Doug, The Chirita was blooming when you sent it and it's still blooming! I know what you mean about saying you will only "collect" one particular kind of plant! I find that very hard to do also .... I love any plant as long as it doesn't have thorns! Well, actually ... I gave away my last Bougainvillea last spring to another DG'er saying I didn't like thorns and then was at one of the big box stores one day and saw this beautiful Bougie in bloom and just had to have it! But it is the only thing in my menagerie of plants that has thorns!

Anyone know the difference between australis ssp. tenuipes and australis ssp. australis?
