Mama Japanese's Surprise!!!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey every body!!
Well I didnt want to get my horse before the Cart , so I waited and I was right to do so!
I noticed about 31days ago that Mama Japanese( Mrs . Blacktail) was getting Broody! so I made her a nest and placed a BB Egg in it! Sure enough she started laying an egg every other day! But she kept getting off the nest ! Then she would sit for a day or two and get off again! So I added a couple of SultanXPolish eggs and a Silkie or two! THat did it! She decided to set!!!!

It was soon after that I noticed that she would get off the nest every other morning to get a drink and a beakfull of food! I counted 10 eggs! But I also noticed Mr. Black Tail would get on the nest , and chirp til she got back! I thought it was so cute!
Then after a couple of days I noticed that Mama would get off and the Mr., would get so agitated he would scratch the eggs around way too much and before I could get to them he had scratch out one and broke it!
I decided I needed to separate her and her nest to a confinement cage! That was a disaster! She would get on the nest and she broke another! So I put them Back in the original nest! But put up a guard to prevent the eggs from being scratched out by Papa!
Last Week I noticed Mama chirping and not getting off the nest ! I was so happy I knew she was responding to tiny chirps in the eggs!
Then on last Friday I noticed she had left the nest and there were no Babies! I ran to the nest and found One crushed eggs , Apparently stepped on by either Mama or Papa! I was so sick to my Stomach! then I heard a tiny little peep! There it was , the tiny little fella still inside its crushed shell, all balled up and weak!

I grabbed up the 6 remaining eggs and ran to the house with them! I rigged up a temperary incu. by taking my old glass house plant Cloche and placing a tiny incu inside with plenty of water! I placed the eggs inside it and covered with a wet washcloth, being careful not to touch the baby hatching!

I noticed the little fella was very dry ,when I placed it in the incu., but he was chirping , weakly but trying!
the next morning I found he didnt make it! So Sad!!!!
I started to throw out the other eggs, but decided to at least look to see if maybe they were still viable! Since I had added eggs after Mama started laying I thought maybe some of the eggs would have a couple of mor days!
Sure enough after gently removeing the "Air" end of one of the eggs I found a very active Baby under the skin! Skin intact I put in back in the incu and covered it with a wet wash cloth and top to the Cloche!
I noticed on the third day one of the other eggs had started to Pip! Yaaaay!!!!
O now it is just a waiting game!!! Crossed fingers!!!!!!!

What a wonderful story, I love how you love your eggies. I hope your mama silkie behaves herself, they take some time getting used to sitting. I have a little Bantam sitting, well I hope so anyway, she had a pile of eggies to big for her. I took 5 of the 8 away and will see what happens with her other 3. I need to see if she layed any more eggies, she's in hiding.

Hi Im a Silkie and my name is Grindyl, Im not to pretty yet but wait til tomrrow and Ill be all dry!

Well this is all the babies that made it ! these two little guys were the tough ones almost magical with their determination to make it!
Their Shells were completely dried out when I found them. I rehydrated them as best as I could but still had to breakaway the hard shell top. these two and one little Sultan XPolish cross actually made it out of their Shells! The litle cross died within 1 hour.
Im watching these two babies like a Hawk! I will keep you all posted as they progress!

Good Morning ! Here are the two survivors All dry and wobbly! They still arent very pretty! I was surprised to see the reddish color in the Japanese baby, Gryffin, I think Mama Black-Tail White had a visit from Mr.Black-tail Buff!!!!!!! But thats fine Gryffin is very healthy and LOUD!!!! It peeped all night long!
Now Little Grindyl, is definitely a Buff Silkie! Black Skin and all! It is very quiet and reserved, but it toddles a lot trying to keep up with Gryffin so it can cuddle!

Thank you NB!
Now to my question for those of you who have raised Silkies ..... Why is my little baby sitting with its legs all splayed out??? Is this normal?
Its been over 24 hours since it hatched , and it still doesnt pull its legs together! It is getting around fine but its scooting on its belly and flaps its wings!

Robertsville, MO

Eufaula,
Are the legs straight or are they bent at all??
I talked to a friend and she had the same thing happend to her
Geta piece of cloth that is strechie and tie them legs together
and change it every 2 to 3 weeks and see if the legs are stronger
repete if not strong..

my silkies were walking around the same day. Isn't there a way of taping them straight? I know you have to do it right away or else the chick will be deformed (and most likely pass)

Smithville, Canada

Eufaula - your silkie's legs any better? What kind of surface do you have in the area that you keep them? You should have something like paper towels. I line a box with newspapers first and then put some paper towels over top.

I like to put down the rubbermaid drawer liner stuff, it's grippy and you can wash it and re-use it over and over and over again. It's awesome stuff. Seems like I just posted a link here or somewhere on how to use pipe cleaners to fix splay leg in chicks.

Actually I think it was on the scooting guinea thread.....

~Julie

Yep it was there...lol. It has nice pics !!! Same principal chicken or guinea.

Thanks for the story of your eggies. I had a half-broody hen that broke all her eggs after 2 babies hatched. It was her first broody and she had a hard time adjusting. Then when she got 2 hatched, I guess she must have figured she'd had enough. Or maybe she felt so inclined to try to keep up with the babies, she forgot about sitting.
I couldn't figure out why she broke the rest of the eggs though. So odd.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

That is common with silkies, we had a few born like that and could not get there legs fixed, dh put them down. That was with the very first hatch we had with our silkies. This hatch all went well. I have heard people fixing there leggies with the method above. We found out to late and didn't get ours fixed.

Well little Grindyl is still splayed legged! It seems healthy enough and Im teaching it to eat like I did with the Turkey Poults, from a straw! It eats and drinks well!
I am going to try binding the legs today! I cant bear to just put it down! So Im going to chalk this up to a learning experience , and add it to my Chicken First aid list!!!
Hes (or She) is so cute and fuzzy now , and they both are responding to me as Mama! They both love for me to pick them up and hold them next to me, in the palm of my hand with the other palm covering them, almost like a little cave!

I hope the little guy's legs get fixed. such a cutie.

How is everyone doing? And how did the pox heal?? I had to put down my crippled keet. He no longer could stand and it was for the best.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hi Lora, The only baby that survived from Mama Japanese was little Grindyl the crippled one! I have been keeping him (or her) in a bird cage and its doing really well! Its learning how to get along with only one leg and so far one good wing! But its so healthy otherwise! I just couldnt put it down! We even came up with a Pipecleaner stand for it so it can keep its head in an upright position until it can get strong enough on its own! It gets itself to water and food by itself now! Knowing I just cant keep him dependant on me for survival, I have tried a different approach. I placed him in the nest under the Silkie mom that just hatched her little brood .....Well She took him right in and so far everything is fine!
You can see Little Grindyl here up under Mama!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Eufala, I am sorry but every time I see your title I think of a commercial I saw a few months ago. Some people are sitting in an Asian restaurant (can't remember now if it was Chinese or Japenese...) but they kind of heckle a guy to order the Chinese surprise. He does and he's not real impressed with what he is served. When he goes to eat it, a big squid or some odd thing jumps on to his face. Well, he's kind of freaking out with this thing stuck to him when it starts moving all over and the server says "Now it lay eggs. Surprise!". LOL

I am glad to hear Grindyl is doing so well! What does that name mean? I have a neighbor named that.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Badseed now you have me confused!!!!!!! Im not understanding the commercial thing! You need to " 'splain Lucy"!!!!!! Im old remember! LOL!!!!
Oh the Grindyl was a mythological critter, and so was the Gryffin! The new babies are going to be named Gremlyn and Gracie! The little BB will be Tracey!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Every time I see your title with "Japanese Surprise", I think of that stupid commercial. LOL You might be old but I'm blonde! The mind works in mighty strange ways.

Thank you for explaining about Grindyl. She actually stopped by today and I didn't think to ask her about her name!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Thank you Sweetie NOW I understand Haaaaaaaa! I ve seen that commercial, !!!!! F-u-n-ny!!!!!
Had to show you of all people my double Daylilly that bloomed this AM! It was a surprise! Came out of some Liriope from my Mom!

You sure grow pretty Liriope. LOL It looks like a nice big Kwanzo. I have a clump of those too. :)

I am trying to talk me into going back outside to work.....

Eufaula & Badseed,
The flower is pretty.
The eggys are geting ready now ..
How is every thing??
Any thing new???
Tracey

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Tracey!

Nothing new here other than I can't count. I was sure we had 46 chickens but we have 47. LOL My daughter was asking me and in my attempt to prove my sanity, I counted backwards from when we got them and proved me wrong. chuckle

Keep us updated on the eggys!
Michele

Robertsville, MO

Badseed and Eufaula, they eggys are still in the tilited pashion
and are getting ready...
Tracey

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hopefully life will slow down here a bit by next spring and I'll consider playing eggys. This year birds were easiest and we are thrilled to have them! They are getting huge and they are super friendly. The kids take them out and play with them in the yard.
