Tiger Eyes sumac

(Zone 5b)

You are probably going to shudder at the news that I planted a Tiger Eyes sumac today. (gulp) I don't want more than one nor have the space for any colonizing but am aware that it is the nature of these shrubs to sucker.

Since we will be mowing around it constantly, is that sufficient for keeping the suckers in check? There is a mobile home only about 4' away from it....could it reach out as far as under that and cause trouble? Or would it be better to dig it up now and put it way out in the back yard?

Probably not. The cultivar shares many, if not most, of the same suckering characteristics of its momma. I saw that plant and it is really attractive and all but decided against it because of just the fears you described above. I don't think it is capable of lifing up your mobile home though. I haven't seen any of the straight species reaching up and under any structures to cause damage but they certainly do reproduce by spreading clonally from root buds . If you want to try to keep it contained, leave it where it is ;)

Is this the variety with the yellow leaves that is fairly short?
I have a patch of sumac that I planted (really) in the extreme, wildest corner of our farm yard, and I was considering planting the yellow version underneath it. It is a corner that is not mowed, and to me the sumacs are a real step up from cocklebur and thistle! I would think that mowing would keep it contained.

Thanks to you both for the replies. No, I didn't quite think it would "lift up" the mobile home - LOL - but thought it might be unwelcome down in their crawl space. By the way, the home mentioned belongs to our neighbors, which made the idea much worse. However, upon more thought, it's not likely to flourish there with absolutely no sun or water!

Yes, I think we'll keep this and keep right on mowing because it appears to be a beautiful plant in both summer and fall. Thanks again!!
