I looked under Bumble Bee but only found 3 in the DG files... have to be more than that.. are several kinds just here in So Cal. Here's one... any ideas?

Yours .. mite possibly 'bee' one of several carpenter bee species. Incidentally, there are some sub-species also ..

Also - many times, the particular flower of which they visit, may can offer some xcellent leads to their ID.
Well, I'll bee! (lol) I've jes found that a couply bee-bugs that I've been calling bumblers (bumble bees) - haint bumblers, afterall. They're actually a larger specie/s of the carpenter bee/s.

sure does look more like a carpenter bee than a bumble bee... didn't notice any bee construction going on nearby... guess I'll have to look harder.
