Dale, on my way back from kerrville this morning, I found the very best nursery in the world in Boerne, texas called Hill Country African Violets and Nursery.................he not only had the best plants everywhere on the property but visitors could go through 13 greenhouses and buy whatever you wanted!!!!!

He had tables of 10 and 12" bulb pans with the most wonderful rexes for 10.00 each............i loved every single plant he grew, including variegated columnea and on and on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One greenhouse had nothing but the biggest and best orchids I have ever seen in the state of Texas........

He even had greenhouses full of nothing but ferns, etc.....I bought some miniature begonias , etc......

I could have stayed the entire day there, but I had family waiting at my house when i did get home (in fact I was an hour late getting home).......

Speaking of mileage in this state (as well as Florida and CA being large, also)...I left yesterday morning to go see the granddaughters at camp in Kerrville....was back home in less than 36 hours and had put over 550 miles on my car......sure glad I wasn't trying to go to west Texas (LOL)

andiel, thanks for the id...it sure does look like it is Hilo Holiday! It has buds showing now...I'll post another photo when it blooms :) I have 3 crowded in the pot. I'm thinking of removing one and planting it directly in the ground to see what happens.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

all the pictures are so gorgeous.

where does one find these cane begonias. I have never heard of them until just looking through this forum. These plants are actually really hard to find in san diego....

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I think this is an everblooming begonia, it has bloomed all summer so far.

What wonderful pictures or the beautiful begonias!
I want them all! LOL!
I wish I could grow the Rex like that!!!
Love the hanging basket of the different combo of Begonias. I will try that next year.

Lana -

That is STUNNING!! Could I grow something like that here in zone 9 year-round?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

OMG, I'm having a begonia attack...I want them all. So beautiful and wonderful to see them planted in the garden. A gal I know in SC grows all of hers in the ground and takes cuttings in the fall for next year.

Hummmmm ... I might have to try that. I wonder if I can buy any now? I WANT THEM NOW!! :)

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

Amanda, I'm not sure what zone they can be left outside in. Here of course they have to come in. Also, don't know how dry your part of TX is but they do like humidity so just plan to be spritzing or using some other method of raising humidity around them.

Zone 9A should be safe for leaving outdoors but take some cuttings indoors for some insurance. And you can still buy some now (some mail order places will start charging more in another month or so for heat packs). Check the sticky links for mail order places. eBay is still selling many. Rob's Violets, Logee's, Kartuz are some you can order from. Check local stores first for your best buys.

Ugh, really? Spritzing? Is there something special I should spray on it?

I've seen begonias around here and they've been looking good all summer, but now they're beginning to shrivel a tad. Also, I purchased some small ones today from a garden center where they told me that I shouldn't water more than 1 time a week. I have an automatic sprinkler set up to go off each morning for 15 minutes on the whole yard (oscillating sprinkler). Is this ok? Or should I rethink some things (not my first choice).

Sorry - I don't mean to hijack this thread ... I just really like the way these look and would love some in my backyard. I've seen some landscapers around her put in some red and then white ones, staggering them for a striping effect in the beds. This is what I'm wanting, but I'm having a hard time finding the white ones, which is ok since I'm not sure hwo well these will work in my setting. :)

Thanks, hcmcdole! I'm going to do that! (Already started looking locally today, of course!) Thank you guys for being so considerate and patient with me. :)

Spritzing (squirt bottle of water) is more for indoors humidity (at least that is what I assume).

Sounds like the red and white ones may be wax begonias. If it is hot and dry, definitely water them. Growing them in the ground will be different than growing them in a pot. The thing to watch out for is rot from staying too wet.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

okie doke, I'll do that. Yeah, I think they are the wax. Good grief, I want some of those spiral leaf ones! But i can't seem to find them around her so .... grrr ... keep looking. :)

I love begonias in the landscape. I'm trying to widen my collection. Here is begonia nelumbiifolia and another rhizomatous one (heracleifolia?).

I think this is carribean corsair. I made all but one of these plants from leaf cuttings, so I am very proud of how they are coming along.

Do you think this is Joe Hayden? As you can see, I keep trying to make more to fill in holes. This one is smaller, so it takes longer!

Looks like 'Joe Hayden' to me. Great looking nelumbiifolia! They all look very nice.

I wish we could grow them as landscape plants.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh how nice!
