Whatever you can plant by seed - Magnolias resent root disturbance, and digging holes for planting larger items may well cause damage to the Magnolia.

Something spring blooming and blue -- think Muscari, Scilla, Hyacinthus or other bulb plants that would have an overlapping/coincidental bloom time.

My father did that when I was a child ViburnumValley. He had Mxsoulangeana and Mxstellata underplanted with blue scillas and it was absolutely stunning. So I agree with VV that really works well Wawknboots
