Gessie. Sorry to stay off topic, but is that a type of AV? I've just begun to fall in love with them and am about to place my first order with Bluebird Greenhouse. I have two that I got at Lowes and bought a plant stand where I can grow five more. ;o) Is the Kohleria in the same family as AV? Thanks!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

El Paso , Texas..............yeah!!!!!!! I lived in both Ruidoso and las Cruces...........
yes, the Kohleria is part of the gesneriad family to which the African Violet and kohleria belong................I don't know if BlueBird carries all kinds of gesneriads or not.............I have ordered African Violets from bluebird...............but I get my Kohlerias, steps, etc. from either The Violet Barn or Gary Mikita (out of Africa).............do you know how to use the Garden Watchdog.................if you scroll to the bottom of the top 30 companies............you will see new reviews..............keep scolling down until you see the alphabet and go to V for violet barn and go to G for Gary............you can then look on their websites .................

or you can go to the 'sticky' at the top of the AV forum and they will have a place that will take you to all the vendors of the African Violet family.............

if I have you confused, you can dmail me and I will try to help more...............

Gail, I can grow the ones that pretty much take care of themselves like that one does! LOL

Brenda, I love that edging, too. It's called a Geneva edge. I have one, Optimara Michelle, I think, that is pink with a purple edge. It's very pretty.

Gail that Kohleria is a perfect example of why I ordered several, I love those spotted bell shaped blooms!!

Even though it hurt me :))) I did top over half my Kohlerias as you suggested. They were lanky and I do want to have full pots. The plus on that is the tops (that I just stuck right back in the soil with the rooted end) are starting to show signs that they are rooting. So I'm hoping to see buds start to set sometime soon...

Rain, pink with a purple edge?? I need to go google :))))

Brenda, I'm sorry, it is Rhapsodie Michelle. Here's a picture. http://www.optimara.com/optimarafieldguide/varietiesm-z/michele.html

The Kohleria you sent me has a bud!! I need to cut it back, I guess, but I just can't now that I see that bud! LOL Once it opens, I will. :o)

I'm with you Rain, wait to see the bloom and then do the topping :))) I saw both Mother's Lipstick and Hirsuta open a bloom before I cut them in half. Some of the others had buds and I had to be ruthless in topping them :))) anyway. So now we'll see how long it takes for the buds to open or if they do after such brutal treatment. LOL

What I found really interesting is a few of them, 3 or 4 had new plants coming up from the tuber (rhizome?) in the bottom and they had green leaves on them down their under the soil? One was big enough that I planted it on it's own and the others I left be and I have one that has sent up three new little plantlets besides the original rooted part and the top that I planted back in the same pot. It will be nice and full!!

So it was very interesting to re pot and work with them and see all the under workings of these interesting plants. This is a picture of Mother's Lipstick but I couldn't get my camera to really show the lovely yellow throat it had....

ok i just logged onto this site because my mom has several african violets. i've never seen blooms as pretty as what you folks have posted here. now bmedel did you say you can start a plant by planting a leaf?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just happened on to the thread...............since bmedel is not here............yes you can grow African Violets and many things by starting a leaf.............there are lots of ways people do.........I use vermiculite only...........some people use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 vermiculite.........

maybe people will be back around..................here is a picture of a leaf making babies........not ready yet to be potted up individually yet.

there are lots of tutorials at the top of this Av forum
here is one:
