pelletory, great pics!!! :)

Outstanding photos, Pelle!!!

Marlton, NJ

Thanks guys!
I would love to know how many kids there are in this family just because there is so much activity at this feeder. I know the Downy has 3-8 eggs.
They are a real joy to watch and I love their little chattering.

Resin, Do you know a way to tell the juvenile/adult females apart? I haven't found
any info on that.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi Pelletory,

It's:
Adult male: red on rear of crown
Adult female: no red on crown
Juvenile: red on top of crown

So your first pic (Post #3649964) is a juvenile, the next is an adult female.

Resin

Marlton, NJ

Yes I know but what about Juvenile female? Any way to be able to tell it apart from the adult female?? Thanks.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

No difference between male and female in juveniles, they both have the red top of the crown. They're only sexable as adults.

Resin

Marlton, NJ

Oh okay, Thanks.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We have one here, Mama is feeding from the bird feeder. The little guy is like a tennis ball with a head and tail. What a fat little guy. Delight to see all the young uns.

Aww, very cute!

Resin ~ are you sure about the male and female juvie, Downey WP both having the red spot? I ask because last weekend, this adult and baby were on each side of the suet feeder. The baby (on the right) would eat and then cry out for the adult and she'd come around and feed it some suet. Maybe it's just not old enough to have the red spot yet? I don't know much about them and was wondering, as I was taking the photos, if the baby was a male or female.

Here's a pic of when it was eating on it's own, with mother on the left....

I guess he/she figured it was easier to just let mom do the work :-)

LOL, Very cute pics sadie!! Aren't they just the sweetest?

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Yep, they are, I love their squeaky little sounds. For some reason, I've never seen a male at the feeders but I've seen them in the woods.

I missed the photos of the Mom and baby Red Bellied WP, I never had the camera when they came to the feeders but boy, what a racket that baby made!!

Here are photos of a female Cardinal, feeding what looks like a juvie Cow Bird, I guess she was a victim of their parasitic habits :-( She sure tended to it like a good mother though.

Quoting:
Resin ~ are you sure about the male and female juvie

Does look a little odd there; the red cap on juvs can be a bit dull, and I guess that's most likely what's happened here. The back lighting also doesn't help show the crown colour well, unfortunately.

Here is ol' "butter ball" getting fed. There are actually two babies, but can't seem to get them in the same picture. See what I mean about him being a tennis ball with a head and tail?

Lol, he is a little pudg ball!

I have noticed the males will not stand for another to be on the suet log with them. A squabble always breaks out and the male is left with the goodies.
I've confirmed 5 Downy here so far.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL, what a fat little guy!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I don't put suet out in the summer, so all this chub is on natural foods or the sunflower seeds.
These guys haven't been too loud. Not like the orioles....sheeeesh...the little ones are out of the nest and loudly shouting demands at the parents. They all get into one tree and both parents try to keep them quiet. It is a riot.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I was walking towards the back door when I saw this beauty land on my tree. I went back and got my camera and rather than take a chance on it flying off, I took the photo through the window from about 25 ft. away. Out of 2 photos I took, this was the only decent one. I haven't seen this one around here. Anyone know who he/she is? Though he seems rather "plain" without any of the cool markings of the others, I just think he's gorgeous! I hope he comes back to eat another day.

For some reason my computer isn't allowing me to open the thumbnail but it looks like a Red Headed Woodpecker! I LOVE them and have had one come to my feeders this year, after a 2 year absence. Their calls are different than the Red Bellied and I can always hear him when he's in the trees, getting ready to head for the feeders. When they came before, they were afraid of the Red Bellied WPs but this year, he runs them off....maybe it isn't the same one from before.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Nice picture Janet. I have never had one here. Nice to see yours. I would have been excited too. Glad you got your picture.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks! I hope to get even better photos of him.... one day.

While I love my Red belly woodpeckers and my Downies, I gotta say that the vivid coloring of this one makes him one of my favorite birds. My heart was just a pounding away as I snapped the photos. HAHAHAHA

Nice pic Janet!! It's so nice to see one of these; thanks so much for posting it!!

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

This was taken from my computer room window, from a distance of about 300 feet, maybe? We have a berm behind our house, where there's wild turkey, coyote and deer. Almost like being in the country, yet in the city with an 8 foot high fence separating the homes from the wildlife....

And, here's my "friend Flicka," the Flicker. I just love the flickers with all of their markings...

Thumbnail by indiana_lily
Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I like the Flickers too, I've never seen them (or maybe just never noticed them) until this year. They never get on the feeders but I see them digging around in the flower beds.

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics indiana!! I Have seen both of these but only once.

Thanks for posting them. I love the Flickers!

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I went into Roseburg today, and on the way I saw a turkey vulture sunning in a tree. Odd, I thought, as I'd only seen them do that after a rain before. He it is, about to take off.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I stopped at an osprey nest too, but the sun was directly over it then, and images showed up with shadowed faces.

Next stop, the Nature Walk and pond, where I saw this cute little duckling.

At my families home I got to watch the Bullocks Orioles. I only see them here when they fly over the yard, though I've tried for several years to tempt them in.

Here's the gorgeous male, along with the bees that were pestering at the feeder.
