Ouch, classic Oak Decline?

Yikes!

I guess I better send the picture to our Extension agent..I read about Oak Decline on the internet and it said it has to be confirmed by tests. Darn, I was hoping it was a rabbit or an armadillo or something..

Thanks for the input..

Good idea!

Serious butt rot on an old tree, due to a decay fungus such as Ganoderma. Very high risk of falling in the next storm - I'd strongly advise getting it removed, if it is in a position where it could damage anything in falling.

Thank you both....

I'll send the information to her..I'm not sure if the trees are by the house or out in the forest, but either way I guess they'll have to go. This area was old forest before it was developed and all of us have some OLD Oak trees..I need to go check mine..

If it is out in the forest and no danger to anyone, just leave it to fall down naturally. Decaying wood is very important to a lot of wildlife (and you'll also save a lot in arborists fees!)

Everything resin said plus very much needed biomass for the soil so I agree and would leave them be if nowhere near a home or other structure. We routinely down trees and haul them into the woodland area for just this reason. It takes about 100 years to create an inch of soil.

I agree with you both.. And thanks for the information..
