CLOSED: sounds like a cicada but more mechanical

Campobello, SC(Zone 7a)

no picture, sorry. Didn't see one. but we were just outside and heard the weirdest sound. It almost sounded like a cicada but was almost mechanical sounding. Thought a neighbor was using a hand saw for a second then thought maybe the battery on my car had died and the alarm was trying to go off. Same cadence as a cicada and about the same length of time. Then it either moved, or another one went off on the other side of the house. The another one further away in the front of the house and yet another one much further. They never overlapped each other, just one at a time. I'm in Upstate S.C. and just moved here last Oct and haven't heard anything like that before either growing up in Mich or the last 9 years in Cali. Any clues?
Thanks,
Kristen

Could it be frogs? Some of the frogs in our yard sound like a squeaky ceiling fan, my DH had actually checked the fan when he first heard it. LOL

It's a big year for the 17 year Cicadas. There are about a dozen different populations, and one is out this year. Maybe they sound different from what you're used to hearing.
