Happy Birthday, laurawege!

My goof! I never knew anyone else that foraged for wild mushrooms (except in France with a pig) other than Italian - Americans.

My grandfather told us he was part Native American, on his mother's side, and that she taught him. He used to use a divining rod to search for water, too.

he was a cool guy he also set a broken birds wing with a popcyle stick

I keep thinking of the Jetsons (remember???) I think that cartoon was the inspiration for a lot of things we have today.... I just heard from a contractor that works with some of my clients that the newest thing is a vacuum powered lift... and it's a clear hollow tube just like the Jetsons!!!! I am dying to see it! they have it in a house in Concord!!!!

but to me so fat the very best inventions are: the dishwasher and the washer & dryer!!!!! the next good thing someone should invent is a way for your clothes come out of the drier already folded!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

the best 'modern' invention in my house is the whole-house vacuum. sweep the kitchen floor, open a hole and sweep the stuff in. love it! attach a hose to the wall...vacuum anything you want.

I had that 'pixie' haircut. my friend had hers cut and it was so cute, so my mom cut mine...I looked like Buster Brown. not the same thing at all, but she tried.

Cindy and Laura, I love hearing about your family's history. It's great!

Kass, if you could invent a dryer that folds the laundry too, I'll give you a million dollars!!!

I used to have the pixie haircut. Then it turned into the John Denver bowl cut.

Gram, I would love that vacumm... not that I like to use one...lol... I love brooms ... I grew up using one!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

At least you guys got something that was fashionable - in the 1960s my mother was still trying to make me look like an old illustration of Alice in Wonderland - a kind of throw-back to the late 1800s - had to have my long hair in ringlets - go figure.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Your Dad sounds very cool! But weren"t the popcycles too cold for the birds??

I didn't know Native Americans mushroomed!

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

I have to say the pixie was better than the permanent wave!!! That was torture! The smaell was horrible, and so were the results!
I just wanted to go roll in the mud after that. Come to think of it I'm still rolling in the mud.

My favorite modern invention is the computer!!! I can't imagine life without it! And the digital camera. Oh yeah, and air conditioning.
That in house vaccuum does sound heavenly, though.

Seandor, any pictures of your ringlets???

Dave, he only used popsicle sticks on the cool birds. Like penguins.

Yes, there are pictures - but they are back at my mothers. I am pouting, with my arms crossed. Definitely not happy.
