Minimum temp for seedlings...?

North Augusta, ON

All my JMG's are sprouting out in the yard.....just heard the weather and they are calling for a frost and a low of 36F....these guys are planted up against walls. Will they be ok or should I cover them along with the other hundred or so seedling I have sprouting? :((

Cover them up quick, I would not take any chances. If you have a tarp, make like a tent then place old blankets on top of that to keep the temps up under there. I don't know the minimum temps for them, but if they are seedlings, you may as well forget it. I believe even 50 is still too cool for seedlings.

Let's see what others say.

Good luck, and I hope they all live for you.

I struggled with keeping the temp in my greenhouse high enough for my MGs all winter. Frost will shrivel cotyledons right away so avoid it at all costs. Low temps don't kill established vines outright, but it does seem to make them succeptible to disease and insect attack.

OK...will cover them up. Frost, for crying out loud..in June...where's global warming when you need it?
Thank you.

ditto on the advisory contributions...a real freeze will kill seedlings and temperatures that are too low will weaken the young vines if not kill them directly...

Frost?? Holy jumpin'! I gotta see if we're expecting it too! I just got all my MGs into containers and some into the ground......grrrrr, I've worked so hard at this to lose them now.
Tks Leeanne for posting this.

I still haven't put my morning glories into their final container for fear of too-cool temps; they have been outside for over a week though, still in their 16 oz cups. I'm hopeful the risk of frost has passed here now; our last frost date is typically given as May 23rd, though we did have a record snow fall this year on May 24th! :)

It's a toss up between making them unhappy with cool temps versus having them unhappy because they really need to move to bigger containers. What to do, what to do...

The safer choice will be better in the long run...wait alittle bit until the danger is past otherwise you stand more to lose....

I'm dealing with a cold night tonight too. I brought mine in. Luckily, mine are still in those expandable pellets. I'd say that 99% of my seeds opened up after 20 hours soaking in water but only about 50% have come up in the little pots. Any thoughts on this one? Some of them are coming up much slower than others. I'm being patient with the other ones that haven't germed yet; hoping that they are just slow to join the party.
