CLOSED: June Bug ID & help needed

Tillson, NY

Hi all,

Every year I get a lot of these bugs eating my plants. Some years they just eat petals off of flowers with petals like daisys and echinacea and some leaves. 2 years ago it was terrible. You could hear them chomping away at night. I tried shaking them off into soapy water but there are just too many of them. A couple of plants died from them eating so much. My neighbors call them June Bugs. They look like Japanese beetles but do not have that irredescent body. They're just brown. The pic is highly magnified. These bugs are about 3/8" long.

Can someone ID them, and what can I do about them?

Thanks.

There's a whole Subfamily of May and June beetles, it would be hard to identify even if the photo was perfect... They're most vulnerable as larvae or grubs in the soil. You can use milky spore nematodes to control them but it's iffy unless the whole neighborhood does it, because the adults fly.
You might consult the local ag extension office and see what they say.
