I do believe my tomato pots are too small

Wilson, NC(Zone 7b)

After seeing Whitewidower's tomato containers, I realized mine are way too small. My plants are about 16 inches tall and have been doing well until a week ago. Will they do ok if I transplant them to bigger containers?
I noticed the tomato plant size matches the container size in her picture. Do they grow as big as the container they are put in or, is the container size selected for the type of plant?

Mary K.,

You don't say what size pot you have them in, if it's too small they may have become root bound. A 16" plant can be transplanted but you have to be very careful and leave a lot of soil/mix around the root ball. Also, what did you use for soil/mix? Perhaps it needs some fertilizer? Can you post a picture?

Tomato plants should be grown in a container that will hold a minimum of 3 gallons of soil/mix, more if they are the large indeterminate variety. I use those 20 gallon (I think) tubs that you can buy at Wal Mart and plant 2 indeterminate plants in each one.

Here's a picture of my Park's Whopper Cr Improved that's been set out in one of these tubs for around 6 weeks.

Hope this helps.

Here's another picture of a Delicious planted in a 5 gallon bucket. BTW, I use Miracle Grow Potting Mix in my containers.

Thank you Red. I will get one of the tubs you've described. I used the Miracle Grow Moisture Control Potting Mix in the small pot I have now. Oh, the pot is about the size of a basketball. Maybe now I will have better luck with this.
