I have just noticed these on a Maxamillion Sunflower. They are not doing enormous damage so if they are good, they can stay. Unless this is just the beginning of the damage. They knock off easily and are soft, I hope the picture shows well enough for ID.

claypa, it has got to be one of those, at least in that family. Are they beneficial to anything? I am going to look up more about them and how to get rid of them.

Not that I know of... I did battle with these things all last summer. They were a plague on a couple of my Azaleas for a few years and I finally figured out what they were. The kind on the Azaleas was tiny!!! The bushes were okay, they just made the leaves look spotted and pale.
I used the safer insect soap repeatedly... if you can figure out what kind they are, you can learn when they are vulnerable as larvae and go after them at the right times. As pests go, these aren't very bad though... I don't see any damage on your Sunflower, it looks very healthy so far!
