What an excellent idea MsC!! I had not thought of that, I'm off to Paypall and I may just ID a few more things I have around here with your plan in hand! Thank you.

New Member needs African Violet ID
Great! I just think it's a beautiful plant and without the proper ID it should be identified as NOID. :(
For future reference, Here's tipI use to help me keep track of who's living on my shelves. When I get a new order of plants in I line em up take a pic with the tags facing so I can see them. I create a folder for my favorite sellers too...that way I kinda can keep track of where I got a particular plant from ...it helps to know how they grow for me, if there are any bugs or other problems, then I kinda know where to start the treatment process, too...of course it does take time to do this & not everyone has that kinda time.
Hope you can ID it prpoerly cause I think it's a beauty!!
Beautiful Violet! Looks similar to one I've seen a picture of before somewhere, but I have no idea of the ID. Wish I did, as I would love to have one like it! Kinda makes me think of one of the Irish named ones I was looking at last year on line somewhere.
This one has the kinda ruffly leaf and green edged pink flowers:

Oh, MsC .... You are soooo smart! What a great idea! Now, if I can just remember to do something like that!
Super idea, MsC! Brenda, please do let us know when you figure it out. It's a very lovely AV. I love those frilly blooms with the green edges. :o)
MsC your a genius!
I spent a couple of hours yesterday morning over at paypal (hmm, does that tell you how many plants I bought this winter) I found that although I had not planned on this addiction : 0)) I had kept most everything labeled correctly. But I was then able to start some records of when and from whom I bought everything I have from eBay (and what I killed : () Also was able to see and remember the ones I had bought and given as gifts. Even then remembered to whom! I was able to label a mini violet that had lost it's tag and I'm really happy about that!
It also reassured me that I had remembered correctly on the three standard violets I bought from the same seller and had labeled as Wranglers Snowbride, Rebel's Green Machine, and this one, Guelph's Dynamite. The first two have bloomed true and it makes me wonder once again if the picture above that I found of Guelph's Dynamite might be wrong and mine is the correct look to it. I still think the written description fits it fine.
My next step now that I have all my facts straight is to e-mail the seller with the picture of my Violet bought from her and hope she has one just like it and can confirm it or tell me if she mislabeled. I hope she has time or is interested enough to respond!
The other interesting thing that I learned is how deceiving the pictures on line can be. Camera's just do not do flowers justice or pick up the correct colors etc. Since I was making records I went to Rob's with the violets and streps I have bought from him. Then holding either or in my hand with his label still clearly on them I would compare the flower in my hand to the pictures he has posted. I would never have guessed them to be the same plants on several of them as the colors are so off in the pics. So now I am doubly happy to have started records and I will be extra careful with my labeling!
~Brenda
Brenda, you have no idea how bad I am at labeling!!!! The only good news is that it is usually something I have propagated and forgotten to label.....so I can go back to the mother plant and get the name eventually.
Where are the rest of your pics?? Inquiring minds want to know what you have.....(LOL)
gail
Well this is the violet I am especially enjoying at the moment. It is called Summer Carnival and it has a very pretty but subtle white, pink and yellow bloom. As usual the pictures just don't do it justice in picking up the colors. This plant has been blooming away for a few months now and all the blooms have been white, pink and yellow until this latest one opened. At first I thought my Victorian Ribbons from above it had dropped a petal down onto it but nope, it's doing this all by itself. I don't know if this is a normal thing for it to do but it's pretty.

Hahahaha.. NO just experienced the same darn thing before...:)
Experience is a very good teacher!
But thanks my grown kids will be glad to know someone ~somewhere thinks I still have a brain....
MsC
that is another gorgeous plant, Brenda.......
It is a long story which I am too tired to tell tonight, but I found the best AV supplier coming back from camp in Kerrville this morning................stayed and visited with him....for over 2 hours....he is president of the San Antonio AV society.........I bought the (he said) first yellow mini violet from him...(I thought of you Brenda as you said that you loved yellow)
A yellow mini violet!!! Sleep good and be ready to type away with all your stories of the trip tomorrow Gail!!
MsC I'll vouch for you with your kids!! :))

Well my beautiful violet that I started this thread about is going to stay a NOID : ( After doing all my record checking and double checking myself on the fact that it came labeled as Guelph's Dynamite I did another search for Guelph's Dynamite online.
With that I came across a nice woman who was offering some on a trade list on another garden site. We wrote back and forth and she sent me a picture of her Guelph's Dynamite which looked nothing like mine and very much like the first picture I had found of one online. Figure that. :))))) LOL
I then found the e-mail address of the person I had bought mine from and told her of my dilemma and how the violet came to me labeled Guelph's Dynamite but looked nothing like others I'd found. I then sent her several pictures of this violet asking her if she recognized it and if she had ever grown maybe another violet that looked like this one, really hoping that was the case. Seemed to me this was a distinctive enough bloom that you would know if you'd grown it before but.......
This was her reply....
well, I went to the AVSA First Class program and looked at their pictures. I agree their pictures do not match their description which is this:
Guelph's Dynamite (9121) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double pink ruffled star/variable fuchsia fantasy markings; thin white-green edge. Light green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated. Large
I do not see any fantasy markings on any of the pictures you sent, but your's seems to fit the descripton the best. Pink, ruffled, thin white green edge. Foliage is correct. I have been growing plants for many years and there is always a difference in some plants along the way. Some get so out of bounds, I toss it and try to find another starter or I just eliminate the plant because it does not stay true."
So since I am not willing to toss such a beautiful plant because it supposedly went haywire somewhere I will keep it as a NOID and I will share it as such.
~Brenda
Noid or not, Brenda ... it's still one Beautiful AV!!
And here is one more shot of mine along with the AVSA description.
I know I'm being obstinate here :0))) but which one do you think looks closer to the description??
Guelph's Dynamite (9121) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double pink ruffled star/variable fuchsia fantasy markings; thin white-green edge. Light green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated. Large
~Brenda
My 2 thoughts are:
~the description does say "variable fantasy markings" ...lol
~ it has probable sported so it's new ID could be Sport of Guelph's Dynamite
I hate it when this happens in my house, too....and I think it happens more at ebay sellers than they admit to...jmho.. (nothing nasty really intended)
It's a beautiful violet by no name or any name..
Keep it blooming,
MsC:-D
I am the worst at identifying plants...........already lost some of the names of new plants with markers..........because Optimara is no longer naming plants they sell, i see people all the time identifying their own.........i would never call that one a noid....it is obvious it does have a name somewhere..............
I agree, I think it has a name somewhere but at my house it's just Brenda's Beautiful Violet! LOL But I'll take other suggestions :)))
Here is something I find very interesting...If you go to http://www.avsa.org/Photographs.asp?Photos=G and look at Guelph's Christmas (of course they do not have a Guelph's Dynamite picture!) it looks like the exact bloom in shape and lacy details except it's red.
I realize I am way new to AV's but to me it seems that this one I have must have some Guelph's genes running through it with it being so close in the details to this other Guelph's except in color. Or am I way off base here and there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of others with the same details???
Whatever the answers are I'm having fun and I might never have found the AV forum on Dave's Garden without this Violet and looking for answers so it has been a gold mine to me!!

After all my blathering on here :))) I went and re-read all of this thread and was reminded once again of Snowrose's suggestion of Aca's Megan and how several of these all have the same "parent" in Mister Sun. The written description that Snowrose quoted of Aca's Megan sounds even better for this violet than the one for Guelph's Dynamite. And also brings me back to my same "gene's" theory. I know I'm slow (should have paid closer attention the first time!!) but I'm trying to learn :)))
So now back to the search for a picture of Aca's Megan. I tried to find it a couple of times on "official" sites but maybe I can find another person with it on their trade list somewhere that would e-mail me a picture.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.....
~Brenda
anytime, Brenda (LOL).................I see another gail on line!!!!
Brenda...
I'm gonna try to help you understand sporting a lil better cause I think you might be confused by what we mean by sporting...ok??
The simple version is like brother & sister's ~same parents, but they all look different- same gene pool but the gene's are expressed differently.
I realize I am way new to AV's but to me it seems that this one I have must have some Guelph's genes running through it with it being so close in the details to this other Guelph's except in color.
The parent genes aren't the issue for your plant, it's the genes that it is expressing.
So the question isn't who it's parents are but how nature choose to express those genes in the gene pool.
It's a very interesting topic and the AVSA magazine often times has nice articles about AV genetics.
One of the reasons we have so many AV's is because they can sport so easily...it's one of the good/bad things about the the lil darlings that makes them so intriging and beautiful.
Does that help clear it up " sporting"... well maybe just a little????
So your plant can be called sport of "it's parent" and that is a real name ...so to speak... if you can propagate it for 3 consecutive generations and get the exact same plant you could register it with it's own "name".
Are you totally confused??
First let me say thanks for the compliment Gail! :))))
That is a very nice explanation MsC and immensely helpful to me, thank you. Being the mother of four kids and having all of them express I and my husbands genes in similar and yet again very different ways can let me picture what you are saying. Most people can look at any one of my kids and know that they are related to each other and generally to us and yet we are all individuals in our looks!!
I do have a leaf of this plant down and I have shared a couple of others so in another year maybe I'll revive this topic. Now don't be shaking your heads like that!!!...LOL Or I'll find out that my growing conditions made a difference in this particular plant.
Now that poor Snowrose has been gritting her teeth through my entire learning experience here. LOL!!! I went about finding Aca's Megan in a couple of different ways and I came up with these two nice shots of it.

Now I'm getting somewhere as though I can't say that I think I've found my plant I can say that this is the closest yet! I'm the same person from above who talked about pictures not doing plants and blooms true justice so this could be it.......
But from what I'm seeing I can tell you that although the similarity's are striking my foliage is a much more grass green color and the edges of the blooms are a very very apple green on mine.
So now I'm going to see if I can e-mail the owner of the above plant and maybe send my pictures to her. The plant above is not shown in close up and when I zoom in on it it just gets blurry so maybe I'll send a picture of mine and she'll say..... yep, that's it!
And if not I'm settling on the Sport of.... theory and I'll get three generations to bloom true and I will officially name it Brenda's Beautiful Violet. As if.......ROTFLOL
Thanks for listening guys!
~Brenda
ROTFLOL ...
Well, we do have to have a sense of humor about these lil plants....if you grow AV's long enough you will eventually end up with lovely sports of lots of Av's...for tht matter even sinningia's http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/738177/ apparently...lol
I still think it is a beautiful plant and my leaf bears the "Brenda's Beautiful pink"sport tag....lol
MsC
edited to add my cybil thread so you can laugh with me!

Now, now, no cringing at seeing this topic come up ladies :))) This should be the last time!!! Alas I won't get to name my violet as a sport of some kind.....LOL
While I was on vacation I received a d-mail from an interested person that had been reading the thread but not posting. She had noticed the seller I had bought this violet from selling a very similar looking violet and it was called Silverglade Oysters....
I've just taken the time to research it and we have a winner!! The foliage is right and the blooms are right .....especially leaving room for no two blooms being alike....
So first a link to a good shot of the blooms.....pink doubles with green lacy trim http://qwip.net/silverglades/oysters.htm
And now a link to a good shot of the whole plant with the foliage that is like mine in color and shape etc
http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/SilvergladeOystersLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/SilvergladeOystersLrg.jpg#
And one last shot of mine from a few days ago, I do love this plant.
~Brenda
we are happier than you could ever now that you have identified this 'lovely'...........(ROTFL)
Whatever it is (though I'm glad you've made a positive ID, cause that's one of those things that will drive you crazy if you let it) it is simply gorgeous! I love those blooms!
Good for you!
Drives ya crazy ..doesn't it..lol
MsC
Hi Brenda,
Well, I would really like a leaf of your beautiful violet when you have one available. I could trade with you if you'd like. Most of my violets are not blooming right now or are too young to take a leaf from. If your interested, I have Music Box Dancer that I can take leaves off of. Send me a dmail if your interested.
Susan
Hello Brenda-
I've wanted a violet like yours, ever since I first saw this thread...I've looked for "garden angel" on ebay, but have not been able to find it...
I looked and did find this listing on ebay, but the flower isn't as pretty. She claims it is the first flower, and that they will look better as the plant ages.
Would you mind taking a look and telling me if you think it is the same silverglade oysters, as yours is?? I really want one that looks like the one in your photos.
Thank you!

Hi seedpicker! Actually, you're correct. SilverGlade Oysters is the plant Brenda has. Garden Angel is a seller on eBay. You found it and didn't even know it! :o)
Sometimes the first flowers do leave a little to be desired, and the later ones turn out as they should be. That's not always the case, but usually. :o)
Hope that helps! :o)
Isn't that the sweetest flower in the world?
All I can say is that the above posted picture that I started this thread with was the very first bloom I got from this plant. I'm way too new to violets to know if they "improve" with their bloom habits.
I re potted this plant earlier in the summer and I shared a lot of leaves and put a few down myself and the poor thing hasn't bloomed since, much to my dismay. Maybe I'll get some beautiful fall blooms...
~Brenda
seedpicker, I totally misread your post. Sorry about that. That last post of mine came from way left field! LOL I thought you were saying you thought Garden Angel was the name of the plant....
Anyway, here's a link to the seller, thegardenangel, on eBay. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZthegardenangel (Though they don't have any plants posted right now.) I think Teazviolets is the seller of the one you linked to above, and they're supposed to be pretty good, though I personally have never purchased from them.
Does that help, or is my brain still asleep? LOL Just ignore me, if that's easiest! ;o)
Brenda.........I am pretty new at this myself..........but once it blooms it takes a good 2 months to begin to bloom again...................I read somewhere that when people are wanting to show a plant, they keep cutting any buds that come on until 6 or 7 weeks before showtime............then the plant has many more blooms than normally produced..........
i was the lucky recipient of your leaves..........going to take a picture of the mama leaves and new babies right now...........
PS>>>>>>>>>> Brenda, when I think my plants are too big in diameter, etc.........I take off all the leaves but 4 in the center.........cut the roots off at the bottom and repot in a new pot and bury the neck in the soil...........they come back with a vengeance and prettier than before.............
Thanks Gail, then mine should come back well and be better than ever too! Great babies you have there!! I have one pot of babies from this plant that I did in the vermeculite as you do . Then I have some other leaves from this one down in a mix I was experimenting with that have not come up yet. I'm ready to pull them up and put them into the vermeculite!!!
~Brenda
don't laugh Brenda...............I have never lost a leaf in vermiculite yet..........but it takes longer than if I put them in 1/2 perlite and 1/2 vermiculite.................so I have changed now.........but we do live in two different areas............today the humidity was scheduled for 84%..........you might be better off with just the vermiculite...........it does work............
I think I'd like that mix, isn't it the one you and Rain are having such great success with??
I didn't care for straight perlite as I couldn't tell when it needed watering, although I do have a bunch of strep babies up now in straight perlite. Very green perlite from over watering but most of the leaves survived.... :)))))
But the mix of both..... hmm, the vermeculite would give it a bit of weight so you could judge the watering needs and you can also 'feel" when vermeculite was damp but the perlite would lighten it up and make it loose. I like it!!
On a second thought here Gail, you have proven that older leaves work well with making babies with your ablove pictures! When you were wanting leaves for your homebound projects you said you'd take older leaves and so when I groomed Silverglade Oysters I sent you the oldest leaves along with putting some down myself. Mine are up and so are yours, good deal!!!!
I think I sent the middle (supposed perfect for potting) up leaves to Rain and MsC ....I wonder how they're doing???
~Brenda
Are either of you two gals willing to trade one to me? or sell one to me?(I have accounts on three different auction sites.)
I really want to make sure I get the same violet that you have...
-Thanks, Taylor
Brenda, I didn't get leaves of that one from you. :o) Gail and MsC were extremely good candidates for them! (Better than me...LOL) That Hoya you sent me is going nuts, though, so that was a much better choice for me! :o)
