Plant ID help, please

Apple Valley, MN(Zone 4a)

This shrub grows wild in the mountains in California. Might anyone be able to identify it? Is it sold at nurseries in the San Jose area?

My cousin lives there and has fallen in love with this shrub. She would like to have it in her San Jose garden - and I would like to order it for her as a surprise if it's available.

Thanks!

The flowers make me think of Holodiscus discolor but the leaves don't look right to me. I can't think of what else it would be though. If it is Holodiscus then I think it'll do OK in San Jose, but if it's something else you may want to do some research first before you buy one--some plants that are native to the mountains may not do as well if you take them out of the mountains.

Whatever it is, if it's a CA native Las Pilitas is probably the best place to look for it (mail order). Some local nurseries have good selections of CA natives but a lot don't or only carry the more popular/common ones like manzanita, CA poppy, etc.

katlian may know. She works the wilds of Northern Ca and Nevada area, if it grows there she might know what it is.

If you're still stuck, try sending a picture to Las Pilitas - he is pretty quick about answering email.
