CLOSED: Caterpillar ID

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I found this caterpillar in my garage today. When I reached down to pick it up, it started flopping around violently, almost like it wanted to bite. Anybody know what kind it is?

I found one yesterday too. Kind of scared me when it spazzed out lol. Couldn't ID it from my books. It looks kind of like a Nessus Sphinx but it doesn't have the horned tail

I believe there's some resemblance to the Common Oak Moth (Phoberia atomaris) ..
Altho' I found no photos of the caterpillar on the BugGuide.net to compare - I did find the one photo in my caterpillar book. I've scanned and posted it below ..

Toward the bottom of the text, there seems to be similar notes to the both of (your) descriptions of this fiesty critter. (heehee)

See what you think ..
