Do you "God Bless You"?

I am really curious how many of you out there say "God Bless You" when someone sneezes. In my house growing up that was as important as someone saying "Excuse Me" when someone was in your way.
My husband obviously wasnt raised that way and cant understand why it is so important to me. I even say that to people I dont know!
If I am in the minority then I promised my husband I would never bother him again about that:)
So please.. Do you say "God Bless You" when someone sneezes???

yes

I've said it so much that it has become an automatic response when anyone sneezes - even strangers.

Always say"God Bless You"''My great grandmother always said we should because, when we sneeze our heart stops' And when we say"God Bless You",the heart returns to beat again'I'm not a med but makes sense to me''

Yes We were told the same thing Sis, and it's habit to even say it to strangers as well.
Please, thank you, bless you, and excuse me were mom's pet pive when you didn't use them, and was grounds for punishment.
So we have passed that on to our girls even Megan our 21 month old uses all four.
But I am amased at how many kids these days act like they have never heard these words.I was run into by a child in the store the other day, and when I said excuse you he just laughed and the mother said nothing, I was shocked, no appalled.

I was also told the same Sis when I was a child and we always said God Bless you when someone sneezed. My daughter was taught to use the phrase and I'm sure it was passed on to my grandson. DH and I certainly got a chuckle last year when I sneezed and my 3 yr old grandson looked at me and said Bless your little heart Grammy.I guess this popular phrase will continue on through the generations.

I always say "God bless you" even to strangers in stores... and I get the most bewildered looks from them...then they finally smile and say thank you. I was brought up saying it, my kids say it, it's habit for me now.

We say "Bless You" all the time. Like others, I even find myself saying it to strangers in the mall etc. Usually they thank me so it's not a bad thing. ;) On another note, I was told that the phrase was originally used after a sneeze to ward off the evil spirits (cold germs etc.) that were taking up house in someones body when they sneezed.

Yes

I know what you're saying Mike' I also wonder what "chaos" a family must be living not having "manners" If children aren't taught they cannot learn''Sis'

No....My father who is an old time Baptist Preacher will say "God Bless You" almost any other time but not for a sneeze! He refused to perpetuate the "superstition" and hence it was not a part of our early training. My Mother's response to a sneeze was.."Cover your mouth!"

Ok, (refer here to the "Brain Fluff thread), "God Bless You" as a responce to a sneeze began in the time of the Black Plague, which often began like a cold with sneezing. When someone sneezed, they often had contracted that dread disease and would soon be dead, so to say "God Bless You," as you were running away with your mouth covered, was a wish that it wouldn't turn out so, but if it did, God had been given notice!

In our family of multiple allergy sufferers, there are times of the year when "God Bless You" seems to take up a lot of the conversation. Manners are nothing to be sneezed at, and the more of us who help our children to understand this, the better off we will all be! Yes,Yes,Yes, always say it.

Can't say that I use it all the time but the thread brings back memories. When our kids were little, and also the grandkids, My wife would always say- scat cat,get that cat tail out of that babies nose. It would always bring a smile to thier precious faces.

Yes - always, also to strangers. Mum used to say, don't suffocate a sneeze (try to hold it back) - it's not good for you. Use a handkerchief and let it go!!

I guess I just do not understand how saying "God Bless you" each time someone sneezes equates to good manners or the lack there of. I personally use the phrase on many occassions but not at the prodding of a simple bodily function. Does this make me a rude person? Does it imply that my up bringing was somehow flawed? I have no objections to the use but it is not a habit I have nor one I passed to my children. Am I less of a parent for it? I don't think so but neither do I think less of those who do follow this custom. Is your concern over your husband not using the phrase caused by the no response to a sneeze or is it a fear that you do not share the same fundamental beliefs?

LOL Mz M! I asked someone one time what kazudnhiet meant. She siad she didn't know but it was a habit to say it. I think it is German? My nutty Sister piped in that it means "Do it again" cause people rarely stop at a single sneeze....so it must work!

I agree Mike. Saying God bless you isn't (to me) manners. It's just a habit with me.

Yes Mike, Thankyou! That is my favorite of the mannerly things to say. So if you will all please excuse me I will depart for my workplace and see you all later!

I am not sure why it bothers me why my husband does not say God Bless you when I sneeze. I (personally) was brought up that saying that is as important as please, thank you, your welcome and such. Perhaps I perceive it the same way as I would if he didnt say excuse me or thank you. I dont expect strangers to say that to me but am always pleasently surprised when they do. I also dont think it rude of others if they dont say it.
I feel I have adjusted to certain "Quirks" that my husband has ( I wasnt brought up that a hamburger cant go on a hotdog roll if you have none and dont feel like going out to get some) but I know that he hates that so I (usually) dont do that.
Guess bottom line is I guess I think its rude of him not to say it even tho he knows its important to me.
I find all the responses very interesting and appreciate them. Please remember that I do not think it rude of others if they dont practice this odd "tradition"
Would also like to add that I know its not a major catastrophie that he dosent say that to me, it was just a question that I have been very curious about.
Thanks
Janice

Now you are talking a language I understand! Part of any relationship is learning the quirks of the other and in my home that is and has been a full time job! I grew up in a family with Parents that adore each other and counting myself there were 5 children. DH grew up in an orphanage with no family and no clue how families act. We have each developed habits that irk the other and we are both stubborn as they come. Many "little" things like this almost caused us to break up many years ago but then he had Pneumonia and almost died. I realized that I would miss him more than I care to imagine and after he came home we developed a much more accepting relationship. We still argue but now it is a lot easier to just agree to disagree!

Yes I always say God Bless you or.(MZM this is for you) "Gott segnen Sie" which is God Bless you in German. Friends & strangers get a blessing. Any time I get a chance to give or receive a blessing I will take it.

God Bless You
Sandy (See I told you every chance I get) LOL

Yes. Being raised in the South, it
is like saying Mam or Sir to your
elders. People in this "New Age" group just don't understand old traditions. If you don't say "God Bless You" try it!! The kind saying may make someones day.
