What is the type of maple tree that has the purple leaves all year? What are the pros/cons of that variety of maple?
purple leaved maple
There are several maple cultivars with purple leaves in summer, but they are all deciduous, so you won't get year-round purple.
Pros - some people think they look nice
Cons - very heavy shade, they suck all the light out of a garden; nothing will grow under them. Some (purple cultivars of Norway Maple) can be invasive.

Are you aware of a better choice? I have a couple of young sugar maples and want to add interest.

They're certainly very nice - go for them!
