Let me find this fabulous website called Violetshowcase
http://www.violetshowcase.com/
Scroll down the page and then click the supplies catalog....it will open on adobe acrobat......I just called my order in on the telephone....it was much easier and then I didn't have to figure out all the weighing, etc.....the lady was real nice when i told her it was too hard for me (LOL)....it came literally 2 days later.....
I have a question for Keyring.....she may be gone by now....if she is i will dmail her....
the question is:
I ordered Physan from violet showcase.....they sent me several brochures on its uses with the gessie family.....even suggesting that it be used as a preventative with fungus, mold, etc....by using 1 tsp to a gallon....even using that solution by taking paper towels and dipping them in the solution to wipe the insides of these big bowls.....or drenching a healthy plant with it to prevent such funguses...is this feasible and good???
Vacation - What I bought & how things were at home...
They're both very pretty. I had a variegated rubber tree once, but was too much of a newbie gardener to realize it was covered in scale, so it died. It didn't have the pretty pinks in it like yours does, though. I also had the funniest thing...a rooted leaf from a rubber tree! It had a pot full of roots, but none of the stem was attached, so it never grew. I called it my indian feather plant. It lived for over a year, just this one big leaf sticking up out of the pot! LOL
I just read that information that Keyring gave us...................thanks so much....bookmarked that one!!!!
Yep ... I call it Pencil Cactus too ... even though it's not really a cactus, but I think a Euphorbia. Here's the link to Plant Files. Mine aren't this reddish color. I had one out in the sun that got kind of pale looking, so I've moved it back to shade. I planted one in the backyard in shade too. I had one that was in a pot on my covered deck and it got so tall it began bending over. I finally cut the top off and should have rooted the top, but just threw it away! I will take pic's tomorrow of mine and post them. A good friend of mine grows them and she roots little cuttings all the time. I have not had such luck trying to root them. She keeps telling me to just cut a piece off and stick it in the dirt .... doesn't seem to work for me!
yes, you can use physan like that. I haven't used it directly on foliage of gesneriads, but I have used a diluted solution as a spray for orchid seedlings out of flask. Some say it's not as effective as bleach, while others swear by it. It's commonly thought among orchid folk that it does set the plant back a bit, so many are are opting not to use it as much as they used to. It definitely does help with mold and algae.
Yes ... Thanks Ki for that link ... teriffic information that I needed!
What a wonderful group of folks here on this Gessie Forum! So much knowledge ..... and me ..... "too little brain for remembering". Sure makes it nice when there's a link I can refer to with pictures no less! :)
Lin, are your cuttings rotting? If so, let the cut heal (scar over and dry) before you plant them. You'll want to treat the cutting like cactus - drier is better, and a very fast draining mix.
alllrighty, we have to stop cross posting! Every time I hit "send", I get a red alert!
Thanks, Ki.....i forgot that it said you could also use this solution of 1 tsp to a gallon and spray foliage....have been afraid to.....but in our humidity......mold and fungus can really get out of control.....
You gals in a later time zone are up late....it is my bedtime.....thanks for the fun!!!!!
hee hee ... my problem is I take the cuttings and put them aside to callous over and then forget about them ... by the time I remember, they are more than calloused ... they are dead sticks! :)
Yep ... lots of cross posting going on tonight on this thread!
Gail, are you in Central Time Zone? I thought you were the same as me ... Eastern. It's almost 11:30 p.m. my time, so that means you are 10:30 .... too early to go to bed! hee hee ... just kidding, I'm yawning my head off and off to bed real soon too!
Nite all .... Sweet dreams!
Late to bed, early to rise, I always say... LOL I'm a night owl, which conflicts severely with my necessity to get up early. Oh well, at least I have fun! :o)
Lin, anytime I knock one of the little "pencils" off, I just stick it right down in the pot and it roots. When I cut the top off mine, I crammed it down in another pot and it took quite a while, but it rooted. Maybe you're paying too much attention to them. LOL Pinch off a pencil or two and let it dry a bit like Ki suggested, then stick it in the pot with the mom plant and see if that works. I wish I had better advice for you.
Gail, if you spray physan, please do wear gloves, long sleeves and a mask. Better safe than sorry!
Lin, I agree that if you're forgetting the cuttings, just cut and stick in the soil! If you don't push it in too deep, it shouldn't rot off!
RainGazer, I can so relate to how much fun you must have had on your vacation and going to that greenhouse looking for treasures and finding them. Doesn't get much better.
Snowrose, I'm so happy to have found friends who understand my plant addiction! You can literally watch my family wilt when I mention going to a nursery. LOL And the prices on the plants are great, too. The Anthurium was $12 which is more than I would usually even consider spending, but I had to have it. The rest of them were $4 or less each. I love a good bargain, and a good bargain on a plant is even better! :o)
I am in tune to what you are saying. Plant people. What more can I say? It's kind of funny when I start talking about this one or that and I get a glazed over look in response and then I know it's time to quit the conversation. Gotta laugh.
LOL I know exactly what you mean! My husband asked what in the world I was doing when I was crawling back there to get that Syngonium. I told him I thought I had found a Syngonium podophyllum 'Albo-variegatum'. He said, "A what??" I said, "An arrowhead vine with white on the leaves." He understood that perfectly. :oP Then when we stopped by our friends' house on the way home, they were showing us their yard (they just bought the house) and all the landscaping that was already there. I started rattling off what this was and what that was and talking about all their plants. I noticed all three of them staring at me. I looked at my husband and asked, "Too much?" (meaning, had I gotten started like I always do and said way more than any of the rest of them understood). He smiled and said, "Just a lot." ROFL A lot of times when I use the botanical name of a plant, my husband will ask if that's contagious. That's his signal that I've gone too far. ;o)
hee hee ... We are all so much alike, aren't we? Folks who aren't "plant people" just don't understand!
Amy: That is a Beautiful Anthurium and a GREAT price for it! Our Wal-Mart has just regular green leaf Anthuriums for $19.95. I love the variegated leaves on yours. Do you know what color the flower will be on that one? Mine all have red flowers. oh wait, I do have a white flowering one in my living room ... forgot about it. I want to find a pink one, but would also like to find one with those variegated leaves!
Love the Crystal Anth:

And also the leaves on the A. clarinervium - beautiful veining on those leaves:

I missed something by going to bed last night!!! I went through the thread again and can't find Amy's anthurium.....
It was the third one down Gail ... Beautiful Plant!

It has no babies to separate from it right now, but I'm taking very good care of it, so hopefully it will put up a few so I can share. :o)
I have never ever seen a anthurium this pretty.....didn't even know they could be variegated like that............so nice, Amy!!!
Thanks Gail! I saw a picture of it a few years ago and have wanted one since. Never saw one in real life til the day I bought that one.
I think I am going to have to get the botanical name for that one and even order it.....heart skipping a beat over this beauty...
I'm not certain about the botanical name...it's either Anthurium crystallinum or Anthurium clarinervium. I feel certain it's A. clarinervium, just from comparing my plant to the pictures posted of each, but I can't swear to it.
Lin, I completely missed where you asked about the flowers. Sorry about that! I think they're kind of greenish, not as pretty as a flower on a regular Anthurium at all. See the bloom going straight up at the top of the picture I posted? They were all full of those, so I assume that's as pretty as the bloom gets. For me, the foliage makes up for it not having a very pretty bloom. :o)
I would rather have great foliage anyday to a bloom!!!
Did some googling and found this site: It shows Anthurium clarinervium, A. crystal hope and A. crystallium - 3 different plants ... all lovely! And, I love it for the foliage too, but was curious if it would have a red bloom. I went back and looked at your photo Amy and I'm sure that green color is the permanent flower color! Doesn't matter though cause the Variegation in those leaves is so Beautiful!
