Look what I found in the Barn!

Check this out....didn't even know I had a hen sitting. We usually have around 20 layers and 2 or 3 "volunteer" roosters that free range around our place. It's not unusual to find eggs in the hay up in the barn or in the corner of a horse stall, etc. I was up just doing some general straightening and found momma in quiet corner where I store sawdust for the stalls. She didn't budge the whole time I was rattling around - not terribly unusual when a hen is busy poopin out an egg - but I got curious about this one. I gently lifted up a wing and sure enough - got me 4 little grandchicks!

I just never get tired of that - it's always an event! I fixed them up with a heat lamp and all the neccessities. You should see "Red", the monster quarter horse that has the stall next to momma hen - it is so cute to watch him stick his big ole head down there to check out those fuzzy little peeper thingys!

How cool is that! Sometimes nature has a mind of it's own. Congrats on the new babies!

Thanks! Isn't it funny how different animals react to motherhood? This one is a natural - she's very protective and her babies surely do love to cuddle. I've had other hens with a brood who were not nearly as attentive.

Welcome to your new additions! I bet Red wakes up every morning wondering what is going on next door! Horses are so curious and (for the most part) gentle! Enjoy them!
