DAILY PICS vol. 12

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Wow on all the photos!!! Good info, too, bsharf - I appreciate hearing things like that about the flamingos, which I would never know otherwise.

Lily, I adore the swallow pics - I rarely have one slow down enough around here to even consider getting a picture.

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

I decided to take some time and visit the bird forum since I hadn't had time for a while. Wow, there are some awesome pics here! This started with a goldfinch which reminded me that I had a shot from a couple of months ago of the resident lesser goldfinch. I have feeding stations set up right outside the window, next to my computer station, so I can watch them all day long as I work. Some are friendlier than others. My favorite little sound are the baby chestnut-backed chickadees, but they move too fast and are too shy so far to get a picture. Here's the lesser goldfinch with his Beatle hairdo.

And my best friends, the acorn woodpeckers have discovered this little tucked away spot by the window. Normally they hang out in the more open spaces but this guy is braver and had to come see what was offered. I can't wait until their babies start to come down, soon.

Great photos, Stellapathic! Acorn Woodpeckers are sure pretty - and unusual.

Those are great pics stella! Those acorn woodpeckers are so cool looking.

We have real crowds of gold finches this year and we're enjoying them so much. Their chatter is very pleasant background music.
Love that woodpecker pic - something we don't see here. I do look forward to this thread each day. :-)

What interesting birds Stella! I love seeing pictures of ones we never get to see on this side of the country. (actually I have to say i love seeing everyone's pictures lol!)

After seeing all those gorgeous indigo bunting pics from some of you I am thrilled to say I finally saw one here this evening - YAY!! This was taken through the living room window with the wrong lens on the camera so its not too clear but I'm so thrilled I'm posting it anyway - whoopie!!

The mockingbird "triplets" have been spending lots of time on the deck around dinner time. They are still being fed by the parents but not NEARLY enough as far as they are concerned. The parents have been seen trying to get away from them a lot lately. So the kids have been investigating other ways to find food. One of them is trying to get at the suet in the holder but can't quite figure it out.

They are very curious about what is in the house too. They like looking in the window.

"Can I try some of that raisin bran?"

lilyfan, I have never "seen" a mocking bird! I have heard them and always wondered what they looked like.
Love that gold finch w/the Beatle hair-do.
That was my first glimpse at an acorn woodpecker, I like his red-do too.
Today the dog kept scratching at the floor of the deck. She drove me crazy so I finally went and checked it out.......this is what I found!

Oh what a great find!!

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

pixie, at the beginning of this forum I started a thread on the acorn woodpeckers. They're really fascinating to have in the yard: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/685686/

Quite an argument going on here and Thank goodness the Red Bellied won.

Yesterday I saw a different male RBW come to the feeders. That made me happy since I've only seen the one male here for a long time. In the early evening I believe I'm hearing 4 or 5 of them calling back and forth from different trees. My DH thought it was frogs making all the racket, lol.

Stellapathic, thats was very interesting info and pics of the acorn woodpecker. I still really like their red "do". So does DS, the birds colors match his room. (groan)

This is the first humming bird I have seen this year. Spotted her a couple days ago. I sat on the deck steps about 20 feet away to get this picture. Not the best in the world, but I had to laugh. After taking the picture, she flew to a tree by me and scolded me. Then flew off chattering this scolding. I had never heard a humming bird ever make a noise other than the flying. It was great.

Very nice pic cpart! Last year was the first time I remember hearing them chattering so much; its quite funny.

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nice hummer pic and such a pretty feeder too! :)

Congratulation for getting a sitting portrait - that's a feat in itself! Re the chattering - I chatter back! What I like is when they come to the window or screen and yell at me if the feeder is empty! They keep trying to get into our screened room. Funny creatures - I just love them.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks guys, that is a new feeder that I picked up this year. It has a glass bottle instead of plastic. Only the one hummer so far, but I did really enjoy the chatter. In all my years of seeing these birds, I had never heard it....guess I never ticked one off before :)

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I was sitting out and heard the tap, tap, of a woodpecker nearby. This is what I discovered. Not real sure if it's a downy or a hairy, but I was sure happy to see it.

This Acorn WP visited many times one morning, always landing at the top of the pole then going down with backwards hops to the feeder.

Wow, great pics tiger!!! Especially love the Acorn WP. I think the first ones a Downy.

Thanks for posting these!

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

It came back so many times that I was sure it would become a regular, but alas, I haven't seen it since that day.

Thanks, pell. I should have more pictures to post after I sort through them. Now if I can just get photos of the elusive Bullocks Orioles. I see them daily, but only in rapid flight or landing deep in the trees.

Marlton, NJ

The Acorn WP has pink for the whites of his eyes.

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

Great pics tigerlily! :)

Quoting:
Not real sure if it's a downy or a hairy

Downy - note the small bill.

Great woodpecker pictures tigerlily!! You really have a great eye for bird photography.

I wish I got more woodpeckers at my house!

Since things have slowed down on the daily thread a little I thought I would start Vol. 13 up.
