European Sawfly Problem

Grand Blanc, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello Tree & Shrub Folks.
I have discovered the European Sawfly larvae on my Mugo Pine. Just thought it had another tough winter until I looked a little closer. Upon reading about this, I believe it has probably been a problem for a couple of years because it is looking a bit sparse. Will it ever recover to its nice bushy (former) appearence. If so, how many years....& will this shub need to be sprayed every year now? (Just learned the hard way last year that my Winter King Hawthorns need to be sprayed every year to control that cedar-hawthorn rust......) Hoping not to have to add another regimen. Would it be better to just replace with a different shrub?

No need to spray it - just put on some old gloves, and run each branch through your hands. Squish 'em all!

I can do that :) Will it recover? I also noticed these orange "puff" balls on it. Some kind of fungus?

Oops. Wrong picture. Here's a close up.

Yes, it'll recover, though obviously the needles already eaten won't regrow.

The orange "puff balls" are just the pollen cones, they're supposed to be there.
