Murasaki Jishi x Q0777

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

This is not necessarily an outstanding new flower....though it is pretty....however, it is a milestone for me in that it is my first success in introducing another color into the BeniChidori/Cameo Elegance/Minibar Rose type plants. These are typically smaller growing plants with smaller leaves and flowers. The leaves typically have a distinctly different variegation which includes clear white areas, which gets translated from the Japanese as "crystal variegation". The translation of the Japanese term for this type of small plant is "princess", which is actually quite descriptive. I will use princess to describe this type of plant and crystal variegation to distinguish this type of variegation.

This is an F2 plant and the first to bloom. I have other seed that I need to start yet....

Arlan,

WOW is all I can say! Congrats x a million! Such uniform colors in the corolla, and the variegation is very similar to the Cameo Elegance I grew last year. Better start the naming of it because everyone and their poodle will want it.

Thanks Joseph,

As this is the first flower I have seen on this plant, we'll have to see how consistent it is. It was a bit cool last night again, so that may have affected to purple/blue ratio. I'll have a few more generations before it will settle down enough to be called a strain and worthy of a name I think. Hopefully I can get another generation in this year....

Arlan, it's lovely and I especially like the blue star.

Hi Arlan, I think it is neat how the variegation came back with the flower is truly unique. It is a very nice little plant.

Hi Antoinette,

Yes, it is a secret that the breed has only recently released to me but it appears I have let the poodle out of the bag!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

I noticed last night that this plant was going to bloom again this morning...however, when I checked it at 3:30 AM this morning before I left for Nashville, the bud wasn't open yet! I'll have to wait until Friday to hopefully get a glimpse of its more mature flowers....

A pictorial history of this plant that is updated frequently is found here: http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/viewentry/125872/

Who let the dog out!....Joseph, such a wealth of information!!

Thanks Karla! I have some gorgeous Four O'Clocks blooming from your seed, and the Daturas are just now budding!

The flower this morning has a more even coloration with less of a star pattern.
