Virus question

Spring Park, MN(Zone 4a)

How likely is it that a virus would show up in a lily this spring after having bloomed and grown normally last season? Nothing new was introduced into the garden last fall, either, so I'm wondering if the slightly deformed leaves only on the top may be from our ridiculous weather this winter and spring. Have you seen it hit an established plant? Airborne virus? If the answer is yes, I'll post a photo for further ID. Thanks for your wisdom on this.

I have some pretty wild looking foliage due to the freeze. Do post a photo anyway.

Will do. Thanks, Moby.

I was just thinking, as I was weeding today.... How can a tulip virus be transferred to a lily if they bloom at different times? It is not from the soil, it's by insect. I'm just confused a bit. Or maybe I weeded too much?.!
How does a virus look on the leaves?

Bloom time has nothing to do with it. The foliage is up at the same time, as are the aphids.

For some reason I thought it had to be in bloom. It can be just transferred from any part of an infected plant to another plant. So what might the foliage look like if it is infected?

The lily leaves will exhibit broken color but it can easily be confused with nutrition problems. It's always best to post a pic if one has suspect symptoms, then we all can hash it over here.

Will get a photo out there tomorrow of this one. Today was too cold and then too wet to get anything done, so I'm hopeful for a decent working day tomorrow. So much to do - I can actually see the weeds growing from in here!

One of the stems on my Chambertain looks to have dark marks all over. I was thinking it was weather related, but now am wondering if it's something more serious. I don't recall noticing anything on the foliage of a virused asiatic I had last year.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Well, I am sure this one has a virus. I pulled it out already. It was mottled and this one looked questionable last year. I wasn't on here to learn when it was blooming, but now I know.
How do you correct nutrient defficiency? It is epsom salt? Seems like I read that post somewhere along the line. And does it change the leave color this year?
Pic #1.....viral.

Here's the asiatic that I was concerned about. What do you think?

That looks like cold damage, but for Mags.... I think I hear the death knell tolling...

I'd like to know what you lily folks recommend for nutrient problems.

Thanks lilydigger, for bringing this up. I did mean to check on that questionable one, once it came up. You just reminded me. Now I wonder if more are infected. After a while, you look at everything like it has something. I'm glad I got it out of there today, hopefully before it got to any others. Hmmmmmmm. I hope I'm not in trouble.

Well, last year it was corn borer and that made me skittish about everything that looks a little strange. I'll be watching this one for sure, but it seems to be looking more normal than the first day I spotted it rather than less normal, so let's hope. It sure helps to have all of you to put another pair of eyes on these problems. Thanks, Moby. I sincerely hope that was it for your troubles, magnolialover, and that you nipped it before it got going.

I'd like to hear about nutrient problems, too. Pardalinum - can you talk about that a little? With all the weather and other issues, things are pretty stressed and I'm sure that doesn't help their resistance.

Thanks again

I will get back later today on this. Yesterday I went out and got pics of some of mine that I believe are suffering from nutrient uptake (chlorosis). But I still need to find a bit of time to edit them before posting.

Does this one have the virus??

DH plowed some snow that had salt in it so he thought he did it. Nothing has been put in new in this bed or near it. They were fine last summer.

it seems like alot of my orientals have the disease too,the leaves look like green with light green streaks .but i don't know why only my orientals would be infected and not my L.A. hybrids,Asiatics or tigers?could it be that orientals are weeker and it could be something else?i can get pics later.

This makes me hopeful, because, I bet we all had the same cold weather after the very intense warm last April. Perhaps it was the extreme weather conditions and we should keep watchful eyes.
