Mantis Flowers

Mesilla Park, NM

These guys were on DH's hat/head when he came inside from cutting down a giant Rosemary bush, there must have been several hatching because he brought three on his hat and 1 on his hair.

Here is Mantis flower #1 standing on Operculina Brownii cotyledons.

I keep bringing them in too! I'll be watching tv while cooling off and feel it crawling on my arm. I come in with baby lizards in my hair sometimes, too.....they're much cuter :)

They are neat guys.. hopefully they'll eat the aphids around here..lol. We have a couple of big long lizards here right now, I haven't seen any baby ones yet. I just misted all the plants and the Mantis came out real quick like and stood their ground.

Pretty neat, Antoinette. . .

I have a few baby Mantis, and will soon have LOTS. This is the first year I bought egg cases and it won't be long I'll have those guys all over the place as we just spread them around the yard a couple of days ago. I don't know their ratio to live, but I got 25 cases, and there are between 100 to 400 babies per egg. I just hope my Green Anole Lizards don't eat the babies. I have lots of those guys too.

GiddyMoon,

How fun, I can't wait for ours to hatch.

This will be a new venture for me with these guys. Year before last I had two that showed up in our yard, but never saw them very long. No idea why, I have more plants than anyone else in our neighborhood put together, and I KNOW I have more bugs, so no idea why they left.

I kept my cases in a paper bag until they hatched. I just checked them daily and one day the bag was FULL. So we took them out and sprinkled them all over the yard and put the cases in the trees in case some had not hatched yet. Recently I found a whole new batch so I am guessing there were more. I have a certain ons that live in certain places. One in my pepper plant, 2 in the glories out front, 4 on the side and the rest in back...they are so adorable. lol Maybe they were eaten?

Hi there,
those look like little aliens they are so cute, one made it to another section of my plants and the other three are hiding somewhere. I've never seen an egg, so going to look that up and see what I may be walking by and don't know it. The land next to me now houses about 40 boxes or so of honey bees.. hopefully they don't all come over at one time..lol

.. my server was down yesterday and haven't been able to come here.., we have been having lots of problems here lately..
