Light Requirements for JMG

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I have a whole brick wall that gets about 4 hours of intense morning sun and afternoon shade, but bright .. would this be enough sun for JMG? I'm trying to find a good area to grow out some of gardeners yogiro F-2's. It would also be a nice backdrop for the bed which will look rather sparse this year.

Morning Glories prefer morning sun over the same amount of afternoon sun...but as to whether the total amount of sun being received at the location in question is adequate >only a test planting may prove for certain...
maybe start them in containers there and see how they do...

Move them if they appear "pekid" spindly and not growing.

The situation where I grew out some of Emma's youjiros last year was similar to yours, with half a day's sun in the morning, except there was a yew hedge behind instead of a wall and enough of the saucer magnolia overhead had died back and been sawn off that there was that much light.

I put up a section of fence behind the MGs, where they did very little. However, for each vine, I also placed a pair of bamboo uprights across the path with cross bars you could walk under, and where the vines traveled along that crossbar is where I got a pretty good show of flowers. (Due to late planting, the pods had to be ripened on stem sections in water later that autumn after frost.)

In general, elevating plants that might prefer more shade than their spot can give them sometimes seems to increase flowers and fruit. Do you have any outbuildings with roof potential? How about letting some MG vines drape themselves over your greenhouse roof? There's a technique of planting tomato vines upside down that seems to work for some...or, what about planting gardener2005's youjiros in "normal" hanging pots that cascade from high up that wall? Also, I think some pots come with one flat side that could be grown against the wall (would be very pretty with one of those one-sided fountains among the MGs also on the wall). If I were to try something like this, I would definitely incorporate water hydrating crystals into the potting mix - don't know the amount to use, off hand.

Last year, I found that I. purpurea types tolerated shade best, youjiro types next best, and nils least.

I won't let anything grow on the greenhouse .. I'm worried the polycarbonate panels might get etched. The only other roof I have is a metal shed that constantly gets rained on by dead pine needles .. too acid and hot, besides I am constantly sweeping off the dead pine needles. Last year when the runaway cordatatriloba were climbing the shed, they stopped at the roof and went lateral. My neighbor has some lattice that we are going to attach to the wall. I will grow them in pots next to the lattice and see what happens. I've even considered letting them climb on a tree that got hit by lighting and turned into a bush in her front yard.

Well, I'll certainly be interested to see what happens, too - hope you keep us posted, 'cause I'm always looking for ways to cope with our less-than-desirable situation
