When will lilies emerge?

Landenberg, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi,

I planted loads of lily bulbs from Walmart about 4-5 weeks ag. So far nothing has emerged - not a single leaf.

How long before they emerge through the soil?

Thanks.

I planted some bulbs about 2-3 weeks ago from Wal-Mart too. Mine had been sitting in the garage for at least a month so I'm not sure if they will even come up this year. I think my lillies in the front took about 1 - 1 1/2 months before I saw noses poking out. I go and light try to uncover the dirt around in case I planted them too deep and to see if I can see any noses trying to get to the light of day. I wouldn't give up hope! I didn't plant mine in fall like a lot of people did so they are slow in coming up. Since you just planted them and you are in a colder climate, I would say just be patient a little longer. :)

Depends on what you planted. If they are orientals, you may not even see them this year as they are busy growing roots. If they are asiatics, it should be any time now. Be patient.

Thanks for the replies. I won't plant anything else where I put the lilies until next spring then. And if nothing comes up I'll know whether they've made it.

Thanks again.

I planted some white tiger lilies last spring... didn't see anything last year, but they're growing good and strong now. :)

Hum...most people think of tigers as asiatics, but they are really L lancifolium. Maybe they take longer to set roots. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone can say with certainty, they've had asiatics that have taken more than one season to show up.

Your white is probably a little lovely called Sweet Surrender.

I've planted asiatics and orientals in both spring and fall. All have bloomed during the first spring. However, I've noticed in most instances the spring--planted orientals do not grow as tall or produce quite as many blooms as they would if planted the previous fall.

I've lost several of my orientals this year due to excessively wet conditions during late winter and early spring. :-(

I've had the same experience as you, Fig, and this spring has been pretty tough on a lot of plants.

Plants?? This spring has been pretty rough on a lot of us gardeners!

It's nice to know I'm not alone. You think things are going great -- then all of a sudden you discover that the landscape has changed! I've been gardening for many years and have never had lilies rot in the ground -- until now!

You all are frightening me ! The ones I planted last year are finally up...... with a lot of blooms, but no flowers yet. We just got about 10 inches of rain over a week's time. I hope they don't rot. Now I'm worried they might. Keeping fingers crossed here. hehe

PeggieK -- I didn't mean to alarm you. As long as your lilies are up you won't have anything to worry about. I believe they're only vulnerable to rot during dormancy -- and in my experience even that's rare. It sounds like yours will be blooming before you know it. I'm sorry to hear about all the rain you've had. It seems it's always either too much or too little!
