tree peony

Now you're getting a little raw!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I wonder if Victor is jealous of Dave's private thread.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Doug has a private thread??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dave/Doug has his wellness thread.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh yeah, I forgot. You know how you push sad or unpleasant things out of your mind?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We'd never push you out of our minds, Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks! If you did, I'd be sure to leave some residue.

Do those tree peonies come in yellow? My son sent me a photo from NW Connecticut of a yellow shrub, blooming now (May 14) and asked what it is.

That's a photo of Kerria japonica - a very useful shrub that bloom even in DEEP shade. An added bonus is bright green stems in winter. I have a few.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Tree Peonies do come in yellow, however that does not look like one. The foliage, the best I can see in the pic, is wrong. Beautiful flower though. Anyone know what it is?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Victor!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

My tree peony has it's usual 2 buds....still waiting for them to open. They are about 2" in diameter and look like they'll pop open at any moment!
Tamberlin

PS: I'll try slugs as fish bait next time I go fishing....how do you get them to stay on the hook though?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Put a hosta leaf on your hook & they will stick to it!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Reminds me of the leeches in African Queen. Or in any lawyer's office.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I found a few slugs hiding under the upper edge of that black rubber edging and cut them in pieces as they went into the trash bag - not the compost.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I entertain my cruel side when it comes to disposing of slugs. I can't talk about it over morning coffee though!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How about grubs? They pop when you squeeze them - like bubble wrap.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I pop the small ones but have learned NOT to squish the big ones in my fingers. I bring them to a piece of slate and hammer them, closing my eyes, or step on them.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah! I love that! The green ones especially are disgustingly fun. Pirl, I learned not to pop the big ones in my fingers too! Eeeeeew!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Some require tooth pressure.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Ewww!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Hakuna Matata!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Here's dessert!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Huge! Ugly! I don't squish that type with my fingers or they splash back in my face - double yuk.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - that's big! What does that turn into? Hopefully not my driveway.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It turns into a mother of thousands. Just like earwigs - I'm sure they're always pregnant with 500 little ones and kill them even if it means squishing.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But what bug is that one in the photo??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Looks like a big grub to me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes I know, but grubs are larvae of something. I only get the small Japanese Beetle ones. Never saw anything that big.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I never have seen anything like that either. I'd like to know what it is too Victor. Do ya think Pirl's dragging you along?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

The big one is a witchetty grub from Australia. They are considered a delicacy there....
Tamberlin

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I think I'll skip that delicacy and have some Oreo Cheesecake instead.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Pirl, want company?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

This is the fourth day that I've forgotten to have it for dessert! Maybe I'll try it for breakfast. There's enough for you, Harper, so come on down.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Save some for me please!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry! Harper gets the last slice. We still have some pineapple upside down cake with coconut rum French vanilla ice cream if that tempts you.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor, were you talking to Tam or Pirl??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good question, Dave.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Does it matter?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

If you ever bring dessert to a Round-Up it does!
