I believe someone else also posted about the tree peony. This is my bloom. The one and only every year. This fall I'm moving it to a sunnier spot. It's such a big, fat, in your face flower, it should have a few more lol
tree peony
Very nice - I have to give them a try one of these days.
After I manage to kill off my new Delphiniums I should have room.
Yes Pirl - this week I'll be planting my Delphiniums and crossing my fingers too.
So far, with the 7 I planted, I dug a hole and put in Miracle Gro potting mix, then a touch of controlled release fertilizer, watered it in with a dash of Epsom Salts and sprinkled the Sluggo all around it. Haven't staked them yet since they're not big - maybe 6" tall.
Didn't know they were a slug favorite. I generally don't have a problem with them. Never see any hosta damage. They make a decent anchovy substitute.
Oh cr@p, I just planted 24 delphs last week. Will I see a bloom?
Pirl, did you ever try them in containers??
We get a strong NW wind here so I will stake in the back. I already planted the short ones that I guess I could have used in the courtyard where they'd be more protected.
NO substitutes for anchovies. Mozzarella en carozza is my favorite.
Venu - did you buy them or start them from seed? I do expect blooms from purchased plants (babies).
Containerized delphs, pirl?
Graceful gardens....but after I ordered them in the dead of winter I read a bunch of stuff on DG that everyone had a difficult time growing them in our parts :( but they look okay so far :)
That's where mine are from also, venu. I might try a few in containers. They're zone 3 so I could even leave them out. It's easier to control pH. I can move them to avoid heat stress and if slugs are a prob, it will be easier to deal with.
A friend of mine had them in containers and they did great. I might add they she was not and never will be a gardener. She had her hubbie pay for a lovely look on her back deck.
Most men would pay for a lovely look on their wife's back deck. Sorry, I couldn't resist!
No apologies necessary...I have always been very jealous of those that can twist a phrase into a laugh. I can pull it off, but not as often as I would like too!!
I won't touch that last sentence.
That's exactly what I mean LOL LOL
Victor, No wonder why Pirl won't give you an answer.
I'm here now and ready to answer! Victor - you are swift!
In the courtyard I could use the Delphiniums in pots but will put some in the rose garden to the right of the courtyard. I'm too concerned about losing them in pots and thinking they really may freeze in pots over the winter.
Now you're tempting me, Victor! I have three vacant pots out there - how many would you put in each big pot. I'll go out in my jammies and measure. OK - 15" tall and 15" wide - NOT square!
And, if you're curious, I only have a small rear deck, which has mildew from the exposure: go to town on that one, Victor.
Hmm - go to town on your mildew exposed, small rear deck.
eeeeew!
Very nice Dave. Congrats!
How old is the tree peony, Dave?
Victor - you didn't answer my question about how many Delphiniums in the pots I described! How can I plant them correctly if you ignore my questions? :-)
Not sure. I will check the spacing on the ones I bought and plant a bit closer in pots.
One Delphinium in a 15" wide pot doesn't sound good and three is too many but I like three to a pot. I'll check with a Delphinium buddy on the west coast and see what he has to say.
I think my tree peony is beginning its third Spring
Three sounds good to me.
You're doing quite well then, Dave.
Thanks, Victor.
Victor - you were kidding about the slugs being anchovy substitutes. Right?
They aren't fish so I'm sure he was kidding.
They may as well be since I don't eat anchovies anyway! Yes - I was kidding.
Darn.
Feel free to try them though. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first.
No! Didn't you hear about that guy who died from eating a slug? It had some kind of nasty bacteria. Eeeew.
Pirl knows that they're not fishy, maybe she tried them.
Didn't hear that one Harper. Sounds like a reality show. Or bad sushi.
In Southold we call sushi bait.
If you knew sushi, like I know sushi...
