Mid-May alpines (and small plants)
Great alpines Rann! I have all those myself but I doubt mine are open yet...some would be. Last night in St. John's we had a flurry of snow! The past 3 days have not risen above 40 F. This is the WORSE spring on record. I thought the cold weather would be over by now. Suppose to reach 50 F today but frost called for again this evening. In the long range, upon my return home the temps should be in the 50's....normally we would be close to 70 F now! Global warming does NOT exist. We are having a mini-iceage! My darwin tulips are still not open yet! If there is any silver lining in this, it's the fact that the Kabschia saxs have been open for nearly 2 months!
Todd - how do you keep going! The weather all over the world is just crazy. Rann you have some lovely plants!
Tammy that Lewisia is a knock out!
Our spring has been pretty much non-existent this year. For the most part our temperatures have bordered on or surpassed record highs. With the exception of the 3rd week in May, when it got cold enough to freeze a couple of my tomatoes and eggplant. The warm temps. have my rock garden plants way ahead of schedule and most will be done blooming soon.
The weather your having Todd sounds frustrating from a gardeners perspective. I can't believe you don't even have tulips blooming yet. I'm already cutting the foliage back on mine. I'm looking forward to all your pictures as soon as your weather begins to warm up.
Rann, amazing selection of plants there. I'm definitely going to look for that Polemonium, how big does that get? I sowed some seed for a native Ranunculus this winter which I'm hoping will germinate. I would hope if it does germinate it will be as perfect in flower as yours. The lighting in your pics seems a bit light for being taken so late in the evening. How many hours of daylight do you get this time of year?
Thanks Todd, Ally and Galanthophile :-)
Todd - that's some nasty weather there - I'd be frustrated too! It's been pretty much the same weather in the northern part of the country as you've had - I think they've barely reached 40°F all May - until this week - now they're supposed have upper 60's all weekend. Sure hope things will warm up soon over there as well! We had a mini-heatwave yesterday and the day before with 60-65°F, but now we're back to normal with 55°F - which definately beats 45°F! lol
On another note - there was a program on TV here last weekend about an author from Newfoundland who lives in St. John's and went on a trip to Iceland to explore the similarities and differences between the two countries. She focused on the fact that Iceland got it's independence around the same time as Newfoundland became a part of Canada and how differently the two countries have fared. Sounded like you got a pretty bum deal with being part of Canada - didn't know things were so grim economically there. It was a very interesting program - and St. John's is very beautiful ;-) I thought it was so cool that I knew someone that lived there :-)
Ally - the sun rises around 3:25 am and sets around 11:30 pm right now (and still a few weeks until solstice) It doesn't get completely dark anymore - it gets a bit dusky around midnight - in a few weeks it won't at all :-)

Rann, lovely selection of plants. the primula is very pretty..so many blooms.
Todd, just think. when the rest of us are missing spring, yours will just be starting. hope it's warmer by the time you get home.
I think we stole all your heat Todd & Rann! Its been in the 90s most days this
week. We're supposed to get back to the 70s Sun. Last night there was a
hail storm & 7-8" of rain just a few miles from here but we only got 1/2".
Rann - enjoy these long days! You've got a lot of beauties there to see. I
love the primula. And that potentilla is just bursting with bloom.
Tam
Thanks gram and Tammy :-)
Ally - I forgot to answer your question about the Polemonium - sorry ;-) It doesn't get very tall but it spreads out a bit.
Thank you Rann, I figured it couldn't get too big. Now I just need to finish the garden area I'm planning for some of these plants that will prefer some shade and cooler aspect.
I saw that program as well Rann....since the collapse of the fisheries, we have had tough times. The offshore oil potential may counteract that with time. Meanwhile, Canada has raped our resources, leaving us with very little despite the great hydroelectric potential here along with oil reserves. we needed a goverment more progressive like Iceland.
I think you're right Todd ;-) Hope things will improve. June 17th is our independence day and in his speach the Mayor of our town referred to this same program as an example of how important our independence is. There are people that think we should join the EU (european union) but I think the majority feels that that'll be the end of our fishing industry and our independence so I really hope that never happens.
