CLOSED: Moth or Bee?

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone! I found this curious little guy this afternoon having a snack. I haven't a clue as to what he is and he sure did buzz like a bee! It had a long black thing sticking out of where his mouth would be though. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Yes, one of the hummingbird / clearwing moths, maybe this one, the Snowberry Clearwing?

Hi Folks

I just read a great article on the hummingbird moth in the new issue of Birds and Blooms. I could email it to anyone who wants a copy. I thought they were pretty neat.

It looks like: Heterostylum robustum - Bomber Fly

Moe, I think you're on to something there... the pattern on its backside sure looks right.
