Why won't my lilies come up?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Only one came up last year and none seem to be coming up this year. I dug down where one was and there it was, nice and firm and looking quite healthy. But not a sign of a sprout.

Not really sure what to say, if it looks healthy and all. How many did you have to start with?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

this one was planted as a solitaire but I have others in groupings of 3 or 5 in a couple of other places.

This is just a guess on the one you found. Could the stem have been broken off when you purchased it? You could leave it for another year and see what it does or you could try scaling it out. What is it?

If they are all being impacted by the same condition, I'd start by having your soil analyzed. Usually, they can take a pretty wide range of soil types, but if these are orientals, they require more acidity.

I bought all of them either 3 or 2 years ago. They bloomed the first year. I have acid soil.

COULD THEY BE PLANTED TOO DEEP?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Well, I planted them 3 times the length of the bulb, as recommended. But I just looked at the one I dug up by accident and it has 3 or 4 sprouts on it that look dried up. Maybe it was the drought?

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Does the bulb itself look dried up? If not, I'd try to scale it out.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

No, it's very solid. the scales are not loose.

Then scale it. Break the bulb apart and place the scales in a baggie with some all purpose potting mix. Spritz the soil once or twice and seal up the baggie. Place it in a dark place at room temperature. Check on it about once a month. Bublets should form eventually. Remember to keep the soil on the dry side. Whenever you check on them, you can give the soil a spritz of water. Bulblets should form fairly quick unless they are orientals. Orientals will probably take a number of months.

Lilies can surprise you sometimes, by coming back a following year after they've seemingly gone AWOL. I'd be inclined to leave the bulb in for another year.

The one I dug up was an Asiatic. Hmmmm, what to do, what to do.
