a Round Up is a gathering of Daves Garden friends. an opportunity to meet webfriends, share plants and generally have a good gardening time.
I am arranging visits to a couple of private gardens and we will have a pot luck supper on Saturday evening and otherwise people do as they wish - probably visit all the greenhouses and gardens within reach!
LOL Violist not really famous - just happened that when the reporter called the Hort office for the name of somebody who grew hops the lady who answered knew I did! I atually had a phone call last week from an elderly pady who wanted to discuss Hops and Virginia creeper with me because she saw the article.
For the rest of you ( I dont think I posted this before) here it is:
Locked Doors – Questionnaire

Welcome! Yahoo a new Albertan! I to will be at the Round up in June so I hope to see you there.
Calgary is a test for gardening but it also becomes a challenge, or so my MOM says. I am from Edmonton where we have an easier time.
Ann
Thank you Ann. Thanks for the RoundUp information carol. I look forward to it. Just curious about something: why have some messages been edited?
Theresa
The editing is usually by the poster - you will see that in the box on the left of your message - editing might be for spelling or to add or delete some information
Not sure if management would edit - they can certainly delete a post.
Erynne, I'm with you. Living in Mississauga calls for locking the doors. I think this is true of anyone who lives in a metropolitan area. We lived in a medium sized city when I wuz a kid and can't remember the doors ever being locked until someone stole some of my Dad's tools from the basement, which had an oudoor entrance.
Off topic re locked doors.
When we were house hunting we were going to move to Mississauga because it was near the airport. UNTIL we discovered no tree houses allowed, nor clothes lines. Only those circular ones on a pole in the ground. With 2 babies at that time, I intended to dry diapers etc outside. Wondered what other 'rules' there were. So, we ended up on a farm with lots of space, tree houses, Wendy house, straw bale teens band practice house, And LOTS OF SPACE to garden. Lots of commuting too, of course.

Fancyvan, with arbor and fencing I decided (again this is off topic) sorry gals/guys...) to plant hops, this year, my goodness already some of the vines are about 8' must have about 20 trailers waiting to climb...so exciting...
Sorry, just had to follow suit...lol
I live in...Castlegar, town of 7000 and dropping, and unfortunately not only do I lock doors but we had an alarm system installed after a desparate addict B&E artist tried to crawl in my teenage daughters bedroom window, while she was in the house alone, following a series of disturbing thefts. There are more alarm systems in the interior of B.C. than you might think, because we have a huge drug addiction and homelessness problem. Its a quiet little town, and very woodsy, but all across southern B.C. its a problem. I grew up in the southern interior, and I never remember once having the doors locked, ever.
I would like to be able to help these people help themselves, and I give what I can to local soup kitchens, free store, shelter, etc, but meanwhile I dont really want them, well, helping themselves to my stuff. (We found a few things in the local pawnshops, btw).
Katherine
Not a nice experience for you Katherine..that's a little different story than the little towns some of us live in!!!
Hi.........I live in London, Ontario.
Normally, all of my doors are locked when I am out and when I am home. However, several years ago when I broke my leg, it was easier to enter and exit the back door. I left it unlocked for over three months when I was at work and there were no issues. It will be an interesting cultural adjustment this Fall when my two nephews from a small Ontario town live with me when they come to university!! Locking doors is blasphemis in the little town in which they live as well as locking cars...........
I live in a little town as well. We never lock our doors unless we going to be away for 3 or 4 weeks. As well we do not lock our vechicles or even take the keys out.
I agree that locked doors only keep the good people out!
Trailingon...I'm lol, hated after being called a liar on another site with regards to unlocked doors to mention that most of the time my keys are in the car...know it's a 'no no' but just forget to take them out.., have friends come in to use the craft room several days a week and others to feed and walk the animals...not sure, if travelling for 3 or 4 weeks I'd even consider locking them...maybe we're not the smartest people on the planet but we're probably to most trusting..lol...
This is bad to admit but I used to leave mine unlocked and running (back in the 80's) in loading zones in downtown Calgary, nothing ever happened. Here in SLC I have had my car broken out 2x both times it was locked.
