I watched Grapes of Wrath last night... I hadn't seen it in many, many years. It brought home how fragile our existence is, at least in environmental terms. In the movie, the displaced were Sharecroppers in the Dust Bowl.
It made me think that most of us today are still 'sharecroppers' because the banks own our homes by virtue of a mortgage. We work away from the land (home) and pay the bank. They worked the land and paid a share of what they grew. If anything happens to us economically and we are unable to pay, we too will become homeless. How sustainable is THAT??
One advantage they had for survival was the extended family with a willingness to work together, something generally lacking today.
How many of us have a Game Plan in the event of a disaster in our locales? Or a personal economic disaster where we cannot meet mortgage payments?
